PAPPIS box challenge!
« on: March 15, 2013, 02:05:27 PM »
I don't know if anyone is up for this, but I have an idea.

I know that not necessarily all war gamers have limited space ( I don't) but some do, and thus I though of a challenge based on this:

Why this?! Well, for starters I think most countries (probably in the world) have an IKEA. So in a sense it is a universal box* making for a good common denominator in a challenge like this. Also it costs ~ almost nothing.

So what's the challenge then, well:

  • Sketch/design/make a write up of a complete set-up for a playable game (terrain and miniatures) that can fit in a PAPPIS box from IKEA. You're not allowed to construct scenic pieces that can't fit in the box (elaborate gaming boards with trenches etc and water features) but you ARE allowed to make us of a flat painted gaming board/mat/whatever when presenting the final thing
  • Keep track of your progress in this thread while constructing (and painting) your set-up
  • Finally prove your concept by showing the whole lot packed in the PAPPIS and in all it's splendour on a table

Anything is fair game; A 10mm massive thing, a 54 mm skirmish on a 4'x4' board and so on. Whatever you fancy!

Also the box can enter into the thing anyway you want to: You can paint it, glue the rules on it, amend it's function or just keep it plain as a storage box.  lol

The sacred outer dimensions of the Pappis box are:

width 25cm, depth 34 cm and height 26cm

Anything within these boundaries is acceptable.

The thing will run for a three months and finish around 20th of July

*If you can't obtain a pappis box, we'll just let you use a box with very similar (preferably identical as it's A4/letter format anyway) dimensions.

Oh well, don't know if anyone's game, but let's hear it.  :)

And the contestants are:

Eric The Shed
Jimbibbly
vikotnik
Estarriol
Dr. The Viking
Dijit
Bobble
Oldskoolrebel
Mason
nic-e
Jeff_W
Vanvlak
elysium64
Constable Bertrand

The threads of the participants should have the tag [BOX] in the title, so as to easily be findable.

I'm interested but I can't commit to many promises just yet.

Of course, I am already in the progress of creating a small 3' by 3' 15mm skirmish gaming area...

You can't get the Pappis box in the U.S. The closest is the Knos box or Kassett box.

The Knos box is closer. It's external dimensions are only 1-2cm different than the Pappis.

Also I am guessing you can only use 1 Pappis box not multiple :).

sounds like fun... I'll try anything once!

Do we make up our own game as well, or would a scenario box (containing rules etc.) of an existant game be sufficient? (Not that I have anything in mind for either, but I might as well start thinking about what I have lying around the place!)

No! You don't have to write your own rules.  lol

You're perfectly welcome to try that as well though. If the rules go in the box - even better.  ;)

Yes I think so too. With the odd bit and bop from this or that. You're not supposed to stick in three pieces of Grand Manner and a few miniatures you had your Golden Demon winning friend paint.  lol

Another box is perfectly OK of course as long as it's not larger. You can construct your own as well for all I care, that will work just fine.

Also if you've just started a project, that fits like a glove in this challenge, you can still include it here. No reason not to, I think.  :)

Can we revise an existing project?  I've got a 10mm sci-fi wargame that fits inside an "under the bed" plastic storage box, which is way too big for my tastes.  I've been meaning to redo the tiled terrain into 'mat and scatter' terrain for a while, so that it will fit into a smaller box.
