Arena Rex - 35mm Gladiator Kickstarter
« on: March 16, 2013, 04:55:29 PM »
Here's the game page.

Here's the kickstarter.

Some interesting ideas in there but I'm not sure I want to add 35mm to my 28mm Gladiators.  :?

I'm torn over this one too. Great concepts, but really not convinced yet. Plus I don't feel like paying $23-45 for new minis once the KS is over.

35mm?  Why not 28mm or 40mm?  You would open up a whole field of cross-game applications this way.  As it stands, the miniatures are bloody expensive and if you don't end up liking the game/cannot find friends willing to spend $20+ per figure you can't use them for much else...

It would be nice if they had more than one sculpt to share as well.  That is a lot to shell out for a few oddly scaled figures that you won't see for another 10 months at least (Delivery estimate is Dec 2013, and delays are always to be expected).

At least I am not too tempted since I don't do gladiators, and don't have time to start yet another project.  :D

The terrible part to admit is I already have 50+ painted gladiators, lions, gorillas, Senators, spectators, etc... o_o

And I'm STILL thinking about buying into this. ::)

I think it looks good but why the strange scale. It just adds to the cost of the minis as well doesn't it. Cool looking concept art. I especially like the bull riding gladiator.

Are they able to convey that much more detail on a 35mm scale than a 28mm scale?  Why not just go with 40mm and put on even more detail if that's what you are going for...  still baffled  ???

.. if you do you'll be sorry.  ;)

Agree. Choosing a size which is more compatable with other manufacturers would open up their figures to more people than trying to create a new miniature size in what is after all a niche market - unless 35mm Galdiator gaming is going to be more popular than beer during 2013?

Or perhaps these folks and the guys behind Wild West Exodus are conspiring to make 35mm the new "Heroic" 28mm?  ::)

Can't deny that the figures look really good - especially the more historically based gladiators, but as mentioned why the larger scale?  ???

There has been a discomforting trend of these larger minis on Kickstarter lately, like that Monster game for example.

The rules look interesting but I think the figures represent fixed "characters", so in my opinion it's more board game than miniature game.

Regardless, it looks like it's funded and being made.

Some of those large fully enclosed helmet ones could be good as ogre type monsters.

I don't understand why people are so keen to pay so much for miniatures.

I really get tired of upstart companies that seem to think they should start their own scale so you have to use only their product. Just like Spartan Games & their VSF stuff, these guys can crash & burn. I'm not wasting my money on products that are incompatable with anything else.

"Arena Rex" really nice looking sculpts but expensive. Not sure if I will buy in even though I am into Gladiators, plus it looks as though there are no stretch goals at all. Still worth a look.

It looks like there are about three arena type games on kickstarter at the moment.
Warriors of darkmyre and an anime type arena game too.

Well, it's the last season of Spartacus so this time next year Gladiators will be long forgotten.
