Yes, home factory painting, it's a good idea, and it's what I did (more or less) on my D&D monster company (from Wrath of ashardalon boardgame box) and on the first 30 zeds. On the D&D minis, I did my fastest painting record (complete box painted in 20days)

But I want even faster work  lol So I will use several speed technics :

spray paint (not only for primer, but for color too)
stain (from brush on "dip" technic)
drybrushs, washes

etc... ;)

The figures are built and ready to paint. TOnigh I added some texturized paint ("3d effect") on the bases. It's a easy trick to improve a mini.

Tommorow I'll be ready to paint. First stages will be done with spray can paint, then a few details (really a few), a wood stain "dip" style stage (but brushed), a few dry brushes (if needed) on bases and hair and finally a coat of mat varnish.

HEre's the current pics. As you can see, the minis preparation is minimal. No molding lines sanding, filling or whatever. It's the horde overall aspect I look after.

Pretty nice-looking group.  Nice work on differentiating them all!

Thanks !

Once again, I almost ruined my figures with some spray paint  lol

I tried a new technic of "ultra speed painting" using a selection of spray paints to make the basic tones of the minis...And you bet it was a disaster.  lol

So I tried to hide this true horror behind a good coat of white primer, and start again. This time, it's "just" speed chain painting : make groups, than paint skin, than clothes, etc...

Flashy colors are a choice : since the next step will be a dark wood stain dip (actually, using a brush instead...but that's the historical name of the technic), so if I want to keep some light in the figures, I have to choose bright tones first.

It's far from being completed, but I hope to finish the base coats tommorow night, at least.

Low parts of the figures are completed !

Then I "randomized" as much as possible the minis, to make groups to paint the bodies tops.

I also kept a big "white top" group (see last attached pic) to save some paint time. Once it will be stained, it will be brown/dirty.

I also started 4 special zombies : 2 policemen/guards and 2 american prisoners.

I hope to finish the bodies tommorow. If I've got enough time, I'll complete all the pre-dip operations too (hair, shoes, details).

I'm interested to see how the yellow skinned ones come out after the dip/stain.

I hope to obtain a group of radioactive zeds or something like that.

I tried to create first a few days dead group (first 30 zeds), then I'm currently creating 3 ethnic groups (pale white (or asian), tanned white, black, and 2 "special" groups ("chemical" green group, useable as few weeks zombies too, and "radioactive" yellow group).

The whole set of zombies should give me a nice sample of apocalypse  lol

Here's the last progresses :

First I finished the base coats yesterday. THen I brushed stain on all miniatures. It was a long boring job, I believe dipping would be more appropriate for this miniatures mass.

The overall result is OK. Some of the figures are pretty nice already.

Now, I'll have to spray a coat of matte varnish, and do the finishing touches (bases, weathering, blood, etc...).

Here's some sample pics after I sprayed a coat of really high quality matte spray varnish. The overal result is good enough for a 90+ zombies speed painted horde, in my opinion.

The yellow skin zeds still be a bit too Simpsons-ish for my own taste, but I'll correct that.  lol Maybe adding some pustules and infected bubos too ?

Tommorow (or later in night) I'll add last details. Since woodstain bring some "dirt" already, I will not add extra weathering (except on black clothes). I will add some "putrid" washes (mostly green, purple and blue citadel washes) on wounds, and of course, some blood painted in scarlett red (best undead blood color IMHO).

I will probably also add white or yellow eyes. In zombies movies, eyes always impressed me, so I believe I'll do some basic eyes too.

The minis should be completed tommorow. Here's the pics :

Hi,

I finished the minis tonight...Or almost, I still need to finish the bases. But I'll do that tommorow afternoon.

Some teasing pics. Samples of each type of zed (crawler, male, female).

I'm happy with the result, regarding the time I spent on them (I started september 23th, 60 zeds).

Thanks !

I finished the 60 zeds group tonight. Here's some pics.

I'll post pics of the complete 90 zeds horde soon. I'm happy of the overall result. The new 60 figures mix well with the 30 first ones too.

Here's pics of the complete 90 zeds horde. Now it's time to work on the survivors painting.

Thanks!

I guess I'm like everybody, having a pile of grunts, cannon fodder I never paint, and painting just a few heroes or masterpieces one by one  lol

A few months ago, I decided to keep my "fun" projects on side, and seriously work on the big not so funny chain painting projects :

zombies, dungeon monsters, basic scenery, etc...

Once it will be done, I'll be able to work on the fun stuff : heroes, nice central scenery pieces, etc...
