The Battle of Hooks Farm
« on: April 21, 2013, 01:06:27 PM »
Hi guys
As you all know this year is the centenary of H G Well's seminal work LITTLE WARS...
I think we should all celebrate this...
How? (I hear you ask ???)
By Refighting The Battle of Hooks Farm (of course :D)
I intend to put on an old school 1913 style game and hopefully take it to the second Partizan this year
here is a photo of my first unit...
some nice shiny Scots
All the best  Aly.
YES!... I KNOW I AM A BUTTERFLY.

Wonderful! I look forward to following this one. Do you have the requisite guns?
I told you so. You damned fools.

Hi 42
As my toys are all 42mm tall the classic firing 4.7"howitzer may be a bit extreme :o
I will be using 4.7s of an appropriate size
Unlike the originals they will not be "live firing"
All the best Aly

There is an interesting article by Arthur Harman in Miniature Wargames 361 showing an alternative way of fighting in the HG Wells style.

Hi Tony
I don't think I have this issue,( I will try and hunt one down )
I haven't decided which rules to use yet
I have an old set of rules by Stuart Asquith which try to capture the feel of HGs original game (but without all the potentual colatoral damage )Stuart also included some delightfully simple rules for toy soldier games in the 2012 Wargamers Annual.
I may try and come up with some of my own...
but I am always open to suggestions

All the best. Aly

I am playing in the Centennial Little Wars game next weekend at Sandhurst - playing Funny Little Wars by Paul Wright (the venue is Paul's house - well, garden!).  We played a test game last Monday and it was fun and great to get my Army Red of 54mm Little Wars Revisited figures into action.  My matchstick firing was considerably better than my dice rolling!

Our first game will be Hook's Farm.

I'd recommend Funny Little Wars as a ruleset or Edwardian Splendour (which are free on the web).

Hi Mike
I have been a lurker on Paul's Yahoo group for some time now, but strangly I hadn't thought
of using his rules :?...I will give them a look
Although the 54s are very appealing I will stick to my 42s...
I don't have a garden or the space for anything bigger (or the knees and flexibility to use the floor ;))
It would have been nice to go to centenary but sadly life... work... etc
My matchstick firing was considerably better than my dice rolling!
One could always fire the dice ;)

All the best. Aly

Looks interesting. I loved young Winston's collection when I first saw the film many, many... many years ago. :)

Now that brings back memories. My first Battles were with my Grandfather & my Great Uncle Gus using H.G.Wells' Little War Rules. I always thought it was really great that those two Old Men spent time playing The Game with moi until I found out they also played it when I was absent.

I hope you enjoy the games as much as I did way back then!

Hi Aly
I think Party Poppers may be the solution to your fire power!

Hi Shaun
That is so mad it could work  lol
The only problem is that my lot could stip out and reload a popper in seconds... :o
The annual Xmas dinner always end with a sprout firing challenge...
We have managed 10 feet and over 15 with a bounce...
And we are supposed to be the grown ups   ;D

Hi 42

Thank you I am glad you like them...

They will be fighting the French at Hooks Farm but I intend to add some Russians to the mix for some later games.
This is because my other great inspiration for making the toys in the first place was The Great War in England in 1897 by William le Queux.
If you haven't heard of this ,it is about the invasion of Britain by a Franco-Russian Army.
Written in 1894 it is a truly ripping yarn ...

All the best   Aly
