If you like toy soldiers and ever go to Portugal you'll have to visit the Toy Museum in Sintra http://www.museu-do-brinquedo.pt/layout.asp?go=coleccao&area=galeria&id_galeria=9 and the Oporto Military Museum's toy soldiers collection.

Aly, I am doing a similar project and I wondered if you could enlighten me as to what gloss varnishing you are using to get such a lustrous effect. Sadly I have not been able to get that look quite right with the products I have been using as yet. It would seem that with the changes to EU regulations whatever it was that used to give the varnish it's oomph has now been removed.

They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,

Hi Trooper

I would love to say that I had a cunning and very clever way of getting the shiny finish on my toys.....
But no !
Even better than that
The way I have found is the cheapest option possible.... Hurrah

I use Wilko's own brand yacht varnish ( from Wilkinsons a general store in the Midlands , they are quite big and I am sure have a web presence )
It is inexpensive and does what it says on the tin  :D

I must warn you , it will yellow with age ... But I quite like this effect
I would also go for the 250ml tin ... Any larger and it will set before you are half way through it

Oh and just slap it on like you just don't care  :D

I hope this is of some help

All the best. Aly

miniature paints gloss varnish is a great gloss, wont yellow over time and is super glossy after a couple of thinned coats

Hi Majorsmith

I have never tried Miniature paints gloss...
Is it oil based?
I have tried quite a few varnishes over the years ,water and oil based but I keep coming back to good old fashioned yacht varnish... I guess it is a case of finding something that works for you and sticking with it, my only worry is that 'they' take all the good 'bad' chemicals out of it and I have to start searching again...

I do have a couple of tins stashed away......just in case  ::)

All the best. Aly

Aly and Majorsmith, thanks for the tips. I shall probably try the Miniature Paints gloss as it is fairly inexpensive. I used to use Humbrol clear polyurethane which gave just the right results but sadly that seems to be defunct. Brussells it seems, does not trust us children with the nasty chemical ingredients. I have been using a Revell clear poly but it is just not up to the job, you really need that deep lustrous "Britains" style look for this to work properly. By the way, loving the look your'e getting there Aly, smashing little figures that really look the part. I shall follow this with interest.

Hi Aly miniature paints gloss is waterbased, its pretty good, but definitely needs a couple of thinned coats rather than one thick coat, the figures below were all varnished with it, no signs of yellowing with age either,

Hi majorsmith

Very nice and very shiny :-*

I am always surprised at how good khaki looks with a gloss varnish...
It is very tempting to do a shiny WW1 game next year....

But first things first... :)

All the best. Aly

I've just discovered this thread and what inspirational figures and painting.
I wargame with 54 mm figures  (amongst loads of other things- I fear I am a bit of a butterfly) using the Funny Little Wars rules which give a great game. Here's a link to my blog on this gaming-

This is all so beautifully different from what most of us are currently doing these days. I really, really like these shiny soldiers. Thatīs the way toys shall look like! You made my day indeed. I just travelled back through the entire thread and read it all. What a wonderful project that is! I remember staring on such with saucer-sized eyes when I was a child, but never got any. Now that I am able to buy and paint soldiers I had never thought on doing it that way. I pull my hat and bow my head to this enterprise and your ambition.

Hi there

Another finished unit...
This time its the rest of the Rifles...

I think I shall re-designate my origonal small unit of Rifles as a volunteer unit... there were many who used this uniform

Next up ... some Cossacks and French Infantry.

Majorsmith... who made your WW1 British officers

All the best  Aly
