A quick question on your painting method; so you do block colours, then wash them with black and do the highlights?

Hello Max. That's exactly right. It's quick, easy and, if you exploit the detail of the figure wisely, very effective. When highlighting though I mix two shades of highlight on the palette, both quite watered down, this allows a double highlight applied at the same time. It's subtile but it works for me. When I get chance to highlight these figures I will try and show some close ups to illustrate if I can figure out the fancy camera! Cheers.

Ok, thanks. It's just considering changing my painting style for a bunch of figures i have on the painting table. The way i paint them seems to take so long and i was wondering if using washes looked better and took less time. I shall try it out.

Hope it works for you Max. It took hours off my old painting style and improved it too.  Keep us posted on your results. Cheers.

Evening all. A quick update on the mob’s progress. All now highlighted and shown ready to be based. Embraced a suggestion Arlequin made and have one chap armed only with stave and knife. It had started of as a glaive, but the cat saw to that and I quite liked the idea.

I have changed my mind about bow numbers for this unit (so they fit neatly with other retinues painted and planned) so they will only get 10 bowmen. These will fit onto the waiting bases front flanks of the unit. A couple over overpainted freezywater flags added, a bit of basing sprinkle and all done. That said, off to Sagres for a week so painting is giving way to another hobby; sun, booze and body boarding for a week. Cheers.

Mob done
« Reply #23 on: June 30, 2013, 03:44:25 PM »
Hello again. Been a long time since my last post and little painting has been done these last few months. I have, though, finally completed an abridged version of Heron contingent. Was panned to be 40 but is now only 30 men strong. This means I only have one more 30 man retinue to paint and my collection is complete! When I say complete, I am expected to be drawn back in by any future Perry releases, some of which we already know about. I also need to compose and paint 3 or 4 command stands, but as far as quantity is concerned, I am nearly there. Here are some picks of the finished Northern Mob. Cheers.

Fantastic painting.  I love the way you have made the stands look a little ragged with figures in slightly different postures and positions giving it the look of a mob with some semblance of order but not rigid drill lines.  Excellent.

That is a very nice unit, like the limited palette, very effective.
