Serenity / Firefly Crew
« on: April 21, 2008, 08:30:56 PM »
Ok so I am on another crazy quest for figures. I have this idea about acquiring, converting, and painting up the Serenity crew from the TV show to use in some later sci-fi game. I have seen a few figure recommendations for the crew but I thought I would see if anyone else has some input.

Now I don't know a lot of the western miniatures out there. But I figure they would be a good source for conversions.

photo of the whole crew

So first off Mal, Shepard and Kaylee are easy as Heresy makes these.

So that leaves 6 left.

Zoe - photo1
I was thinking maybe Cordelia Valentine from Artizan

or Eliza Stone with a different head
.

Wash - photo1
For Wash it is another Heresy figure, Engineer Adams with a head swap. Not sure what head though.

River - photo1
I have no idea here. But I thought there might be some western young woman in a dress. Artizan Agent Lake may work

Simon - photo1
Again no ideas, maybe a western figure in a vest? I would prefer something less fighty looking.

Jayne - photo1
Jayne should be reasonably easy. Hasslefree Grant with some added hair

or Heresy Lt Hawque

Inara - photo
No idea here but I want a non-fighty woman that is in a nice dress (could be most anything from western to japanese/chinese or maybe even something from victorian era perhaps?)

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I always thought that this piece of Hasslefree goodness would make a nice River, or even Inara, come to that:

And someone once made a Jane out of Heresy's Ruddock figure:

Witha gun swap and a greenstuff bobblehat. Can't find the picture now...

I think that will work nicely for River. Thanks.

Freebooter special christmas minis could be suitable for Inara:

Copplestone castings are great and have a lot you can choose from in the future war range (Urban Cowgirls for Zoe ,citizen militia packs for Kaylee and Jane they even have Men in Black for the hands of Blue guys.

Recently Copplestone had a monthly special called "Future Western" - it looked an awful lot like Firefly characters to me!

The special seems to have vanished from the Copplestone site, but if you emailed them they could probably tell you which figures/ranges were used in it.

Audrey,

I like your thinking with these figures.

I'm been trying to get a Serenity crew together for a while, but haven't had much inspiration so far.

The idea of using of using Hasslefree's Grant for Jayne is obvious once it's been suggested. I have one on my painting table but never thought of using him

I'd suggest giving him "the hat" as well as the goatee etc. Oh and maybe a bigger gun. Definitely a bigger gun

I solemnly promise to steal your ideas once you've got them finished

No help on the figures, but you can download a 28mm scale Serenity paper model and Mule from here.

I may use this Black Scorpion figure as Inara. I am still not 100% behind this one,but it at least is a non combative woman in a nice dress. The dress doesn't exactly fit Firefly, but it is the closest yet.

The Freeboter figures are reveling a bit more than I want Inara to show. Plus there prices are a bit higher than I want to pay. I still wonder if there are some western civilians that may have a woman in a nice dress.

Actually it did help. They used the Heresy Doctor Who figure for Simon. Plus the Firefly model all kitted out and painted looks beautiful

a very good idea, Audrey, I like the Black Scorpion girl best, I think she fits Inara better than the Freebooter ones.

I'm not familiar with these characters but a quick web search on Inara reveals her wearing something not unlike a classic 30s or 40s dress.

With that in mind, how about either the top middle or top right of this bunch? (Pulp Figures Femme Fatales)

You'd probably have to do something with their hair, though.

Here is another possible Inara. It is another Black Scoprion figure. The dress style fits. Her hair style even works nicely. The only minor draw back is the gun, but that isn't so bad. By the way it is the 4th figure from left to right, in the red dress.

The gun isn't that bad. after all, most of the weapons used by the crew appear to be a "sci-fi-ised" version of Old West firearms, so a little filing and some green stuff should make it ideal. Maybe trim off the bows from her dress & file her jacket down into a one-piece and she would be a great Inara.
