What's the best glue for gluing resin?
« on: May 11, 2013, 06:33:30 PM »
Michael is very kindly assembling the lovely Mannikin minis he gave me.  We've hit a minor snag -- since replacing the minis would be impossible, what is the absolute best glue to used to attach fiddly bits to bodies?

Resin's a tricky one.

First, be sure to wash all the parts with some water and dish washing liquid, to get rid of the mould release agent. That stuff will wreak havoc on both paints and glues, so it's pretty much a must to clean them before glueing.

Then, I almost always seem to use superglue on resin parts and most people seem to do so as well. There are those who will apply two component epoxy glues, but (especially for fiddly small parts), superglue is the easiest and certainly quickest way.

Don't forget to pin the components where applicable/possible... ;)

As Daeothar pointed out - always wash and pin when needed.

Superglue with a small piece of Greenstuff works for me, though for small area sizes (say 5mm x 5mm or less) superglue alone does the trick. There's different levels of quality in superglue. I use the cheap stuff without issue - though you may want to try different types.

I have always used superglue on resin with uniformly good results

Fiddly bits can always be reinforced with a bit of green stuff after the glue has properly set

Aye superglue gel, and maybe re-enforcement with liquid superglue.

Superglue, as the others said. For very small, fiddly joints (like arms or heads on miniatures), I use a small bit of green stuff to position the piece, then apply superglue with a toothpick.

I do the same thing with green stuff. I've found the superglue gel works better as it doesn't run into places you don't want it to go and it does adhere better. The other thing I don't like about plain superglue is that it has a tendency to start pouring out of the tube as soon as I uncap it.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice.  Although I may not be able to start painting them yet anyway -- this weekend I appear to be baby-sitting a pair of kittens.

I would add one more step --

1.  Wash
2.  Score/scratch joint area to reveal fresh material and increase surface area
3.  Glue with epoxy or superglue

Super glue or, if you're in Australia, Tarzan's grip.
Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

That's an interesting brand name.  Is it better than other glues?
