French Pike - 4 July new pics
« on: June 30, 2013, 05:19:22 PM »
I've been chopping up the Perry Bow & Bill, Mercenaries & Men at arms boxed sets to create a unit of French pikemen.

The unit will represent Picard pike of the Therouanne garrison c. 1513. I have equipped them with pavise as a bit of a leap of faith based upon the French trained and equipped Scottish troops of James IV of the same year.
I'm guessing the rationale would have been the same in an attempt to reduce the effect of the longbow when facing the English......and I can paint nice liveries on the pavises !  :D

4 July 2013

Here's the first of the new batch of assembled figures to be painted.

I wanted to have a go at painting some religious iconography, not sure if it's worked to be honest - a bit gawdy perhaps? what do you think?

Great to see that the French are started  and agree that these would work equally well for Scots pike at Flodden.

not sure what happened there - note the new photographs.

I thought i'd have a go at painting some religious iconography on a pavise so here's my effort - St Sebastian. Not sure if I like it or not - a bit gawdy perhaps, i'm not sure.

It seems to 'work' alongside the other pikemen but i'd appreciate your views.

I think it fits fine. When you have a few more it probably won't stand out so much  :-* :-*

And as for the painting itself  :o :o 8) 8) :-* :-*

Wow, absolutely beautiful! The poses you've came up with look so natural and lifelike, and the paint jobs are stunning! Looking forward to seeing more of these.

Cheers

That freehand is beautiful! They look as though they have had a hard day. They need to head to the pub and have a beer or two.  :D

Cheers Breaker !

The unit I'm basing them upon didn't see that much action but did a fair bit of standing around, so I tried to achieve the look of mildly bored observers.

My pace is a bit slow with them too but i'll post again when they're done.
