Any advice on modeling infinity models?
« on: June 18, 2013, 01:03:33 PM »
So fathersday saw me getting the last mini's I needed for an Aleph army. (daddy loves his toysoldiers, kids)

Now I'm busy cleaning these lovely mini's and gawd, these are fiddly....

I see myself having some problems pinning those parts together and I'm actually considering not to.
Then again, that would mean one mini falling over would results in lost limps and decapitations.

Any thoughts from anybody who's got some more experience with these mini's.

Get a tiny pin vise & bit.

I use a 0.8mm drill bit for nearly all model pinning, but I found myself using a smaller 0.5mm to put my Infinity Nomads together. You have to be more careful, of course, since it's easier to accidentally snap off the actual drill bit when it's this thin.

Also, it helps a lot if you stab the tip into some wax/soap before you start drilling. Eliminates the friction. I keep a little tea light candle in my pinning kit for this reason.

I think it's worth pinning any joints that need it though. The Infinity models are so fragile; you want at least their joints to be robust.

I just used some superior quality superglue  for all my infinity minis. But then again they just sit on my shelf and only my PanOc Army ever travels a bit...
Far less active than I used to...

*sigh*
Yeah, I was afraid it would be:'pin it anyway'.
Thanks.

That I did not know. Thanks for a useful tip.

I mainly use the superglue/greenstuff route instead of pinning.

Superglue by itself yields a very fragile bond (drop-shocks are one of its primary weaknesses).  The GS adds a shock absorbing feature to the bond, giving it a bit more resilience.  I've not had bits break off since starting this method.  I've had bits that were just superglued fall off by themselves after being knocked over on the tabletop.

You can also add a bit of ash when you superglue to make it stronger. I keep a small container of it from my barbecue (cigarette, campfire or incense would also work, I'm sure). Old trick I hear dof in an old Citadel Journal that I find pretty useful when it's too small or I'm too lazy to pin.

Sodium Bicarbonate (which might be around as "baking soda" also works as an accelerant and it sets hard.

Pin 'em, pin 'em all.   ;D
In my experience, if you don't you'll only regret it later.
The amount of time it takes to properly pin the joint is time saved later touching up breackages or redoing entire paint jobs.

I tend to use a 0.8mm bit for just about everything, just make sure the points line up dry fit, and then pin and glue.

They are fiddley little buggers, and they're delicate too. All the more reason to pin.

I've bitten the bullet and started pinning yesterday.
Got a yudbot, sophotect, myrmidon, asuras and chandra spec ops done.
it's..... do-able.

I've ended up getting some 0.9mm wire to go with my 1.0mm drill bit.
It gives me more control then the extremely hard 1mm wire I normally use.

Thanks for the advice all.

A bit late but try a good quality two part epoxy for really strong bonds, especially for those fiddly bits.

Get a smaller bit Voivod, in may not seem much of a difference, but you'll notice it when you're drilling out those tiny arms on stuff like the sofotech.
A 0.8 mm bit will give you a nice snug hole for a 0.9mm pin. ;)

My approach was to buy one, get thoroughly fed up with the fiddly multipart nature and throw them out of the window.

Yes, that's one technique, though I'm sure you'll feel more satisfied if next time you stick it in an envelope and post it to me.  :D

Well I'm done.
Couldn't find the energy put together the dakini tact bots, since they're not in my first list anyway.
Not to mention I'm not crazy about those models and they're even more fiddly.
They'll be for another time.

Thanks for all the advice, now for a couple off games and the daunting task of painting these things........

You're on. Can't wait to see those AI slaves of yours.

But expect me to keep playing my Haqqs with proxies for some time still... ;)
