Post apoc water vehicle (more or less finished 8.8.)
« on: June 24, 2013, 02:47:40 PM »
Here is a first mock-up of a post apoc raft/float (what's the correct word here?) I am building for this year's Gubbspel Galore in Sweden. The theme is "Maritime", so I thought I could at least make an effort to build something to bring. A whole table is out of the question, but Silversixx will hopefully allow me to put my vehicle on his excellent board :)

Quickly assembled from existing Pardulon parts, mainly shanty parts, oil barrels and a few other things. Mast, motor and all kinds of other stuff will be added once I'm content with the overall shape.

I'm a bit uncertain regarding the materials used. As it is, it looks like it's constructed entirely from scrap metal. Might be a bit heavy for a raft, maybe wood would be the better alternative. But then, most modern ships are made from metal as well, so probably not. What do you think?

Looks great  :-* :-*

Raft is the term  :)

How about having most of the under structure from wood (telegraph poles, railway sleepers etc) and keeping the upper stuff the same.

Having it listing (leaning) to one side might be a nice touch  ???

In Post Apoc you just use what you'll get. Some coffee stirer wood in between would not harm the picture though. I wouldn't deem it sea wothy yet(ever?), but asume it would work great along a coast or in a river delta.

For long time operation you will need some place to sleep (just add a hammock somewhere and some weather protection.

You might consider to elongate the "cabin" with some kind of textile sunshades. I recomend gauze bandages. They work great to emulate camouflage nettings (just dye them in a mix of in olive, black and varnish before applying, they will stiffen up and be drybrushable afterwards).

That looks great!
 8)

Bibbles has a few very good points there, all valid.
At the end of the day, it looks like it 'would' float, so I would not overthink it too much.
It looks 'right' and thats the main thing.
 ;)
How about some flotsam/debris caught up between the barrels etc?

I especially like what you've done with the barrels as floats.  8)

Works for me.  I think Mason sums it up, yes you could go a different route but this one works more than ok.

Great! If Silversixx has no room you are welcome on the harbour table, I will hopefully finish in time for my fallout scenarios.

Wood bits underneath would be good, but the barrels as floats sell the idea of an all-metal barge.

200 litres/55 gallons of air per barrel will make that thing float of course.
