Dragons everywhere.
« on: June 25, 2013, 04:50:20 PM »
I am in the process of writing some fantasy based stories and have been inspired by the thought of a land filled with different dragons. As a result, I am thinking that I may need to buy a selection of dragons for 28mm.

The dragons will need to be 'classic' dragons (four legs and additional wings) and will need to occupy a wide variety of environments. There will need to be exceptions to the classic design (I will need a water dragon that has no wings and looks aquatic, for example) so I am open to suggestions but I am not after chaos/undead dragons, oriental styled dragons or clockwork dragons... and certainly none that have riders. I am after dragons that look like they would be natural rather than magical.

I am not after huge dragons but a selection of different sizes is fine. I will be looking for a single 'king of dragons' in the future but I expect he will have very explicit requirements...

With all that in mind, I was wondering if anyone has a favourite dragon that they would be willing to post up to give me a few ideas?

All suggestions are welcome because, as strange as it may seem, I have had difficulty finding any that I like (apart from the Reaper Pathfinder Red Dragon).

All help is appreciated :) .

I like this one from Dark Sword. He's big though.

They also have small dragons. These are my two favourites.

Harwood Hobbies has these two little guys

The sculpts are much better than they look in the photo. I'm using them as hatchlings in a project.

Quite a few of the old Grenadier (and some Ral Partha) Dragons were quite nice. Some are still/ again in production.
Mine still are in bits though. Mirliton sells some of the Grenadier ones: http://www.mirliton.it/index.php?cName=fantasy-2528mm-dragons

I always liked this one (despite the wings) because it looked less typical dragony- http://www.mirliton.it/product_info.php?pName=copper-dragon-ii&cName=fantasy-2528mm-dragons:

http://www.mirliton.it/product_info.php?pName=white-dragon-ii&cName=fantasy-2528mm-dragons:

I'm kinda partial to this one, bit quirky and fairly small, not a nice pic though- http://www.mirliton.it/product_info.php?pName=pond-dragon&cName=fantasy-2528mm-creatures

As dumb as it sounds, for big ones have a look at the McFarlane Dragons .

Cavalcade/ Dragonblood has part of a Mosasaur, which might work for a sea dragon (unless you need the whole thing)- http://www.dragonbloodminis.com/cavalcade/Dragonblood_Dioramas.html

I quite like their Lava Lizard, which might work as flightless dragon ( http://www.dragonbloodminis.com/cavalcade/Dragonblood_Sunless_Kingdom.html ) same goes for Khurasan's Mojave Pilgrim (http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/15mmpostapoc.html ).

We've just started a new range of Dragons this year.  So far, we have a White Dragon, Black Dragon and Green Dragon.  The Blue is about to go for casting, and we're about to start work on the Red Dragon in the next week or so.  More to follow later this year too.

DGN3 - Green Dragon (painted by Andy Taylor)

Some very nice dragons there :).

The Mirliton White dragon is now on the list :)

The two smaller Darksword ones are cool too.

The Otherworld ones are nice but pricey (not that it matters in the big scheme of things... if they are nice enough, I'll pay)... I'll see where they go from here.

This is my favourite dragon:

But I'd like to see more ideas :)

D&D minis range  has a lot of diferent dragons, of diferent level/size, and the prices are often cheap.

They can easily be repainted too, or detailed if needed.

I'd have to agree with the flight of dragons post.
Nice dragons Andrew. Fantasy dragon kickstarter next then?  ;)

Hmmm...

I've got two or three of the old Grenadier dragons lurking about somewhere, including that copper dragon. I loved that model - the whole whimsical look about it, very Rod Matthews, I thought.

I have just had the thought that one of the others might make a nice addition to a Beowulf project that is lurking in a corner of my mind.

Saying that, the Otherworld sculpts are a bit nice too!

For a big sea dragon this one from Plastoy might work (available in different colours): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plastoy-Dragon-Figurine-French-version/dp/B001BA2V1Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372239186&sr=8-1&keywords=plastoy+sea

Papo, Schleich, Bullyland & Safari all have dragons and monsters as well, though being 'proper toys' they're on the big side.

Once the Reaper bone stuff is available, there should be a couple of useful ones as well that won't *cost too much*: http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Previews
