Can the tall red post boxes be used with Victorians?
« on: July 09, 2013, 02:46:44 PM »
The subject pretty much covers my question, but to state it a little more completely, I like to know if the tall, red post boxes are appropriate for use in  Victorian London or do they enter service after that time?  Thanks for the help.  Richard

From Wiki

"In the British Isles the first red pillar post boxes were erected in Jersey in 1852.[5] Roadside wall boxes first appeared in 1857 as a cheaper alternative to pillar boxes, especially in rural districts. In 1853 the first pillar box in the United Kingdom was installed at Botchergate, Carlisle. In 1856, Richard Redgrave of the Department of Science and Art designed an ornate pillar box for use in London and other large cities. In 1859 the design was improved, and this became the first National Standard pillar box. Green was adopted as the standard colour for the early Victorian post boxes. Between 1866 and 1879 the hexagonal Penfold post box became the standard design for pillar boxes and it was during this period that red was first adopted as the standard colour. The first boxes to be painted red were in London in July 1874, although it would be nearly 10 years before all the boxes had been repainted."

Here's a later Victorian box:

'So do all who see such times. But that is not for us to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that we are given.'

Thats a bloody good question. With the brilliant answers I shall have to get one or two for my Lycaon's to lurk behind  ;)

You can roughly tell the age of a post box by the initials on it,  V.R, G.R, E.R etc.
Don't!

You know I've never noticed that, seems obvious now  ::)

This has been really good stuff.  I'm glad I asked.  The fact that I'd seen one used on one of Thunderchicken's Victorian layouts made  me confident that they were Victorian appropriate but it's always nice to know more.  Richard

Victorian ones were often square side - hexagonal or octagonal in plan view

I found a photo of a round one at the corner of Adam Street dated 1883 on page 99 in Walks In Old London by Peter Jackson.

joroas, that's correct and I appreciated your posting of that picture, but my point about the picture in Walks In Old London by Peter Jackson is that the picture in that book was actually taken in 1883.
