Johnny Turk in Africa
« on: November 07, 2006, 06:26:32 PM »
Gentlemen,

I think I am going to have to get a pile of Brigade's WWI Turks, as God wants it. Until I have enough money for Australians, could I have Mehmet and his friends conceivably invading East Africa? I have a pile of Zanzibari Arabs, and they seem like natural allies. Plus it would let me have my Ruga-Ruga fight someone other than the British.

I was going to do Germany in Africa but I think everyone else here does that and I feel like being different.

Well, they made a grab for the Suez Canal, and the Arabs had already been to East Africa...

Certainly for a what-if or "Pulp-War" theme. I´d be happy to do such a scenario.

Pete,

your attitude is right, just buy things God wants people to have.

WW1 Turks are cool, would also love to make them. Don't worry. Not next time

No, that would be ridiculous, you fool! They tried to invade Africa, but didn't get any further than the Suez Canal.

Only joking, why not, if that's what you want?

Alternatively, look at "Corto Maltese in Africa" by Hugo Pratt for a scenario with Turks vs. Corto, his Arab pals, and some escaped Highlander POWs in Arabia (and some Highlanders that have marched in to help in the nick of time from Aden. Does anybody make Highlanders in tropical kit? I wish they would).

At a pinch Darkest Africa Arab types could be used for El Oxford and some of the more irregular-looking Turks. Foundry already do Corto and his Danakil pal, Cush (though they called him "Limi").

I'd say buy this graphic novel if you see it anyway, whether you intend to game it or not. It's full of inspiring Great War Darkest Africa stuff including KAR vs. the Somali Mad Mullah, Abyssinians vs. Somalis, dastardly doings aboard the wreck of the Königsberg and the Leopard Men of the Rufiji!!!

Here endeth the lesson. I fear I have gone on a bit. Sorry.

It's not that I want to do this, it's what God wants. I am only a conduit for His Divine Will. I do appreciate everyone's support. Plus this way if/when we should ever get together, I can bring the Turks.

I actually own Foundry's Corto Maltese, purchased when he was sensibly priced and came with seven friends. My preliminary list for Brigade consists of the Turk command, two packs of riflemen, possibly a Maxim gun, Sikhs, and maybe some of their generic Askari. I've got some Renegade Early War Tommies, who will just have to suffer with wool tunics in Subsaharan Africa. C'est le guerre.

I love Corto Maltese comics   Have got the Corto mini too and will definitely make a Corto game/project one day. Maybe a 45Adventure campaign, Corto vs.Rasputin  8)

By the way, why is it that everyone thinks that only the Aussies fought the Turks? If you listened to them lot Down Under you'd think there weren't any Tommies or Frogs at Gallipoli, nor Palestine neither.

I blame movie-makers.

My local Regiment fought in the Dardanelles and Palestine, before being sent into the meat grinder of the Western Front to sort things out, after everything went "tits up" in the 1918 German offensive.

My in-laws are Australian ex-pats. As far as they're concerned, Paul Hogan personally kicked the Kaiser in the keister, kissed Frau Kaiser, then stole their silverware and pawned it in Woomoburra, NSW. Mel Gibson would have personally run Mehmet out of Gallipoli if only there hadn't been any English involved. And the Queensland Light Horse were bulletproof, capable of catching shellfire in their teeth, and single-handedly captured every village in Palestine through a combination of pluck and Australian insouisance.

I find it impolitic to disagree with them.

You've got me going now, Pete. Think I might get me a few Brigade Turks, too. Perhaps some Asien-Korps and all.

In addition to Corto Maltese I quite fancy doing a scenario based on this:

I already have Tropical Brits from my "Great War in Africa" collection. So it won't be too much of a stretch.
