Rumble in the Jungle
« on: July 19, 2013, 11:25:53 PM »
I ran a Darkest Africa game set in the Belgian Congo for the HotLead boys in Stratford the other day. I used a modified (because "plagiarized" is such a harsh term) set of FUBAR rules. It was set up with 4 factions (but 8 players), including Force Publique, Arab Slavers, African cannibals, and an ivory trader of questionable loyalties. I have included their scenario sheets below.

SCENARIO: “RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE”
CHARACTER:  LT HENRI ROMFELD (BELGIAN FORCE PUBLIQUE)

It is the year1889. You are in the far northeast corner of Congo Free State, on the banks of a river that flows into the northwest corner of Lake Tanganyika, in the heart of Africa. It is still a wild and untamed area. The Force Publique have tried to take control the area with little success. Arab slavers still practice their trade as they try to hang on to their once thriving empire, and the local African tribes still practice cannibalism. Neither the Arabs nor Africans want anything to do with the “White demons”. It is a time of revolt and unrest.

You are Lt Henri Romfeld, commander of a small outpost of Force Publique troops. Over the last two years, you have been in charge of this remote the north-east corner of the Congo Free State. Your orders are to force the native tribes to collect rubber, pacify any local unrest, suppress the Arab slave trade,  and “tax” any ivory poachers or big game hunters that you come across. All of these you have done with great success and brutality!

The Congo Free State has sent a number of agents throughout the area to gather ivory and help suppress the tribes. Word has come to your headquarters that one of their agents, Lars Sturlusson, has become greedy, withheld large quantities of ivory from the company for himself, and is recruiting natives to carve out his own little empire. Even worse, rumours abound that he is trying to sell this area to the Germans!

You have been sent out to destroy Sturlusson’s camp, capture the ivory hoard, and eliminate Sturlusson “with extreme prejudice”. However, if he finds out about this, he may flee or try to ambush you. You also have to be aware that there are still hostile tribes and Arab slavers working in the area.

Troops at your disposal:
Lt Romfeld (Veteran)
Headquarter Unit of Askaris (Seasoned & old rifles) + European Officer (Veteran & modern rifle)
4 x Unit of Askaris (Seasoned & old rifles) + European Officer (Veteran & modern rifle)
Unit of Askari light artillery (Seasoned & old rifles) + European Officer (Veteran & modern rifle)
Unit of African Tribal scouts (Veteran & Bow)

Note: Each unit is accompanied by a group of native bearers (of supplies). Should you lose them or be more that 12” from them, your shooting is reduced by -1.

SCENARIO: “RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE”
CHARACTER:  LARS STURLUSSON (BELGIAN IVORY HUNTER)

It is the year1889. You are in the far northeast corner of Congo Free State, on the banks of a river that flows into the northwest corner of Lake Tanganyika, in the heart of Africa. It is still a wild and untamed area. The Force Publique have tried to take control the area with little success. Arab slavers still practice their trade as they try to hang on to their once thriving empire, and the local African tribes still practice cannibalism. Neither the Arabs nor Africans want anything to do with the “White demons”. It is a time of revolt and unrest.

You are Lars Sturlusson, originally from Norway, and the operator of the most profitable ivory gathering station in the area. Over the last five years, you have been very successful in controlling all trade in this area, driving out the Arab slavers, suppressing tribal opposition, gaining the trust of other tribes, and making the Belgian authorities rich. One local tribe revere you like a warrior god for your ability to kill lions with one shot. They make up some of your best hunters.

You have become disillusioned with your work and the Belgian authorities in general. Over the last two years, both you and your partner, Yuri Michaelovich, formerly (aka “deserter”) of the French Foreign Legion (but everyone calls him “Frenchy”),  have been siphoning off some of the ivory, and sending it across lake Tanganyika for the markets in German East Africa. The profits of these sales have kept both of your families living quite comfortably in Dar El Salaam (on the Indian Ocean in German East Africa). You’ve decided to take this last load and make a break for it, then retire in luxury.

As “Frenchy” returns with your boat, you hear rumours that not only are the Belgian Force Publique (under the command of the equally corrupt Lt Romfeld) marching towards your station, but that Arab slavers and some hostile Africa tribes have moved back into the area. Timing is everything!

Troops at your disposal:

Lars (Elite + Elephant Gun)
“Frenchi” (Veteran + modern rifle) & African hunters (Veteran + older rifles) + maxim gun (6 bursts) + African Queen boat.
Paulus (Veteran and modern rifle) & unit of wild Masai hunters (Veteran + old rifles)
2 units of Ruga Ruga (Seasoned + old rifles)

SCENARIO: “RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE”
CHARACTER:  IBN BEN DHOVAR (ARAB SLAVER AND IVORY TRADER)

It is the year1889. You are in the far northeast corner of Congo Free State, on the banks of a river that flows into the northwest corner of Lake Tanganyika, in the heart of Africa. It is still a wild and untamed area. The Force Publique have tried to take control the area with little success. Arab slavers still practice their trade as they try to hang on to their once thriving empire, and the local African tribes still practice cannibalism. Neither the Arabs nor Africans want anything to do with the “White demons”. It is a time of revolt and unrest.

You are Ibn ben Dhovar, Arab merchant, slaver and poet-warrior. You once ruled this area like a prince. However, over the last few years the Belgians and Germans have continually reduced your territory, holdings and profits. This must stop!

The Belgian Force Publique and the operator of their local ivory collecting station, Lars Sturlusson, need to be taught a lesson. Your scouts have reported that the troops of the station are spread out, and this is your chance to eliminate the station, and the Belgians!  However, there are also African tribes in the area to be wary of. Some are allied to the Belgians, while others fear becoming sold into slavery by your men!

Capturing any slaves or carriers found in the area would also add to your wealth, prestige and dinner pot!

Forces at your disposal:
Ibn Ben Dhovar (Veteran, chainmail and shield)
3 x Arab units (Veteran + old muskets)
1 unit of  Ruga Ruga (Seasoned + old muskets)

SCENARIO: “RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE”
CHARACTER:  UBANGIMUCH (CANNIBAL CHIEFTAIN)

It is the year1889. You are in the far northeast corner of Congo Free State, on the banks of a river that flows into the northwest corner of Lake Tanganyika, in the heart of Africa. It is still a wild and untamed area. The Force Publique have tried to take control the area with little success. Arab slavers still practice their trade as they try to hang on to their once thriving empire, and the local African tribes still practice cannibalism. Neither the Arabs nor Africans want anything to do with the “White demons”. It is a time of revolt and unrest.

You are UbangiMuch, Chieftain of the cannibal NhookeeNhookees. You once ruled this area like a Great Chieftain. However, over the last few years the Belgians and Germans have continually reduced your territory, and potential to raid other tribes (I mean, a cannibal’s got to do what a cannibal’s got to do!). You have also lost many of your tribesmen and women to the Arab slavers. This must stop!

The Belgian Force Publique and the operator of their local ivory collecting station need to be taught a lesson. Your scouts have reported that the troops of the station are spread out, and this is your chance to eliminate the station, and the Belgians! You plan to kill or capture all of the White men (and who doesn’t enjoy a little white meat now and then?) and steal the cattle kept in their kraal. That should intimidate the foreigners and bring you wealth and glory. Capturing any slaves or carriers found in the area would also add to your wealth, prestige and dinner pot!

Forces at your disposal:
UbangiMuch (Elite + club)
2 x unit of tribal spearmen (Veteran + throwing spears)
1 x unit of riflemen ( Seasoned + old rifles)
1 x unit of Maiden Guard riflemen  (Veteran + old rifles)

The game quickly broke down into the Belgians decimating the Arabs in a prolonged firefight, while the Cannibals looted the trading post (collecting both cattle and captives/lunch), losing half of their warriors in the process. As for the ivory trader, he escaped with his ivory on the steamer.

"Frenchy" arrives with "The African Queen" to rescue his partner and their ivory. Their Maxim gun is cleverly hidden under the tarp at the bow!

Seeing that his spells did not turn the Wazunga's bullets to water (obviously, his warriors are not pure enough of spirit and worthy of such a great gift from their ancestors!), the crafty witchdoctor, Shaka YooHoo, invokes the "bushman's camouflage spell" and tries to disappear....

Cool looking game.
Really like the look of your huts.
A mighty big pot you have there.
Large enough to cook dinner and have leftovers. ;D
