Sd.Kfz 251/1 - WIP
« on: August 02, 2013, 10:10:57 AM »
Hi all,

I have been working on my second ever model and though I would share my posts from another forum:

We after completing the Puma I enjoyed it so much that I got hold of a 251/1 'Hanomag' half track.

I thought I would share my work in progress.

So far, I have painted the interior and added the dial & Radio decals:

As it will be hard to access the interior after building I weathered at this point:

I like the wet look, as this is exposed i like the idea of trapped water from a light late summer rain, not enough to create loads of mud just making the interior wet.

I plan to paint some equipment to go inside before gluing the top down. As always comments welcome.

Biggest problem I have have is that is how it looked while drying, not it has dried it looks, naff

So while I try to work out how to keep the wet look (Satin or gloss varnish maybe?) I have been working on equipment to add inside:

Weapons still need a coat of Matt.

Cheers

Here is the naff dried up look I ended up with  :(  :o    :?

Shocking

----------------

So been sat at work today, looking through pictures of various German armour in France and beyond and looking at how they attached equipment and spares as well as foliage.

Well I was going around the office and went into the build area and saw a box of bits and bobs to be chucked out, amongst those was various cables etc. So I had a look through cut open a few cables as I thought it would be good for attaching bits to the 251.

It was after this I did my usual search for cheap 'seafoam' which is used by modelers and railway guy's to make trees, it's a natural weed that looks really good when adding leaves to it. I wanted some for a while to add branches to my armour, but the cost £20 for a box, when I only need a little. So what can I use?

Then it hit me, I remember way back seeing people make trees out of wire and I have just found some. This would also solve my per-concived problem of the seafoam being too fragile to handle my massive paws picking up and move the APC's around. Wire = stronger or at least bend back in place

So I sat at my desk with a borrowed pair of pliers and this is what I came up with in a few minuets today....

It's a start and only my first test, need to get the scale to fit.

Been so long so here is a small update...

Small update:

So I have added a few layers of filters, then on to some chipping. Here is a photo during this process.

That was a crap dark picture, sorry.

Took some new pictures this morning, after chipping:

Next:

Weathering tracks
Adding mud
Streaking effects etc...

Carabus  ;)

Next steps done.

Here are some pics I took today:

I am not too happy with the tone of the mud, need to add some wet patches, waiting for that to arrive. Need to add some foliage to the sides, well that's the plan.

Carabus  ;)

---------------

I hope that is not too much in one post, I will make sure my next WIP is on this forum as well.

Cheers

I have removed image 5 and 10 as they had SS marking on the numberplate.

Thank you for your kind comments  :D

I am not happy with the mud looking one dimensional, will be working on that.

Thank you very much for the comments  :D

Yeah to answer that question, it's not my first model by far, but 2nd time for me to use weathering products, other than dry brush and inks in a GW style. I went off and read a lot about armour modeling and how they do things, having always been a miniature painter I applied that to armour in the past and was always stunned buy what other can do. So i decided to give it a go. I dabble a little on some sci-fi stuff and didn't like it, then tried oils for effects and did not get on at all with them.

Eventually I tried with enamels and acrylic paints from AK and they seemed to work quite well. I am happy to share information I will add the Puma up if people are interested and some minis?

I would like to see the Puma.

I'm still learning the 'how to's' of vehicle modeling experimenting with oils, MIG, AK products etc. Lot of info out there, but sometimes it can be overwhelming. But the military modelling community seem to be very willing to share ideas, which is very helpful.

Colour choices seem to be the start, I used Life Colour range.

LIFECOLOR Camouflage Series RAL 7028 Dunkelgelb - Base sand colour
LIFECOLOR Camouflage Series RAL 6003 Olivgrun - Green stripes

If you wanted to add the red/brown use I would go with as I have with the 251, I used

LIFECOLOR Camouflage Series RAL 8017 Rotbraun - red/brown

Dont forget to add some thinner LIFECOLOR do some too.

I got this set:

Remember to add any decals prior to weathering over a satin or gloss varnish! I would recommend my new friends, Microsol and Microset, amzing products for decals.

Then I added the all important 'Filter' this tones down the bright original colour to a more used paint colour we see in photos and museums. Next is a pin wash this is a miniatures similar to adding ink to miniatures but the satin varnish make the wash flow into the small lines and edges. A little thinner on a brush to clean up the lines.

This give you a bases for the rest of the process which varies dependent on the look you want or the location of your subject.

Hope it helps.
