Of Gods and Mortals, 1st pictures.
« on: August 18, 2013, 09:27:25 PM »
The 5th book from Osprey Wargames is coming out in November. It's a warband game, where you are a God, with a band of your mythical creatures and historical followers, taking on other Gods and their bunch.

North Star are doing an official range of Gods and creatures for the game. We are also planning to launch a Nickstarter pre-order program for this range, and details will be released soon.

I've been sharing some of the first photos on Facebook, have a look here:

The Minotaur is a Foundry model that snuck into the pic – it's from the 'Theseus and the Minotaur' pack.

The Minotaur is Foundry.

Our 'Official' figures so far are listed here:
http://northstarfigures.com/list.php?man=159&page=1

I hope these are not considered average (I refrain from using the m word).  :)

Because OGAM is such a big project design wise, we agreed with Osprey to just make the Gods and selected 'legendary' characters, and that you build the rest of your warbands from existing historical and fantasy ranges. We'll be for example promoting the Crusader Vikings and Greeks to go with the game, but they will not be in anyway 'official'.

But the only figures you'll see in boxes alongside the rulebook in shops are the Gods and Legends.

I think the God figures are the most difficult to source, and that is why we will hopefully have 8 different ones available in the end. Building the rest of the warbands will be an enjoyable challenge sourcing suitable figures from the figures you have and the ranges available out there.

The rules will be immediately familiar to anyone who has played SOBH, but it's not just SOBH with a different cover!

The game focuses on warbands led by a god, accompanied by individual legends (heroes, monsters etc.) and small units of mortal troops. A sample Norse army from the book includes:

  • Thor, Fenrir, a Dvergar Weaponsmith, two Valkyries, a unit of 8 berserkers and a unit of 4 skirmishers

While an army's god is the most powerful character they have (usually), they're not omnipotent, and rely as much on the faith of their followers as the mortals do on the power of their god in battle. So a victory requires gods, legends and mortals to work together in harmony.

The core book includes sample Greek, Celtic, Egyptian and Norse pantheons, as well as a full unit builder. That's a total list of character profiles for 37 gods, 45 legends and 53 mortal unit types.

Sounds quite interesting and a great choice for some of us historical players. I have Viking and Greek figures already so its good to hear I can just add Gods and rumble.

It sounds reminiscent of the Wargods series by Crocodile. With the basis being the Song of Blades engine, will there still be group activations etc? I'll be interested to have a look at the rules for sure!

Looks great!  :D

@nick. Are the Celtic 'werewolves' new sculpts or are they from an existing range? If so, which one?

@Smith. How large can a group of mortals be? Is it down to their type? Berserker, skirmisher, warrior etc?

Ray.

Yes, the activation system remains more or less intact.

Mortal units are made up of 4–8 figures, determined by player choice. The one real exception to that rule is that some units have the Rare (X) trait, where X is the total number that can be fielded. So Rare (8) would give you the option of two units of 4 or a single unit of 4–8 figures.
