Best Celtic opponents for Foundry Caesarian Romans?
« on: August 23, 2013, 03:09:39 PM »
Have all the Copplestone Romans and Germans, but would like to move into Brittania. I like the Warlord stuff, but it's too small--Celts should be taller than Romans! Anyone have any ideas? I was thinking maybe Renegade, but their range is kind of small. I wonder if the new Crusader stuff would match up well?

I have a smaller force of "large 28mm" Celts (smaller compared to the hordes of "normal 28mm" Celts).  It is composed of A&A Miniatures, select Renegade figures (none with the cricket bat swords), and a few odd later Foundry figures.  They are a very good match.

I don't have any of the new Crusader Celts, but based on Mark's past ranges, they are likely to be a wee bit smaller than the ones listed above.  If you were just looking for compatibility, they'd go fine with the other "large" Celt figures.  But if you're looking for something larger than the Copplestone Foundry Caesarians, I suspect you might be disappointed.

Crusader are either exactly the size of Foundry or slightly bigger. In style and poses they'd the best match, imho.

The A&A Celts are great, same designer as Aventine. Some of the Warlord stuff is also useful even if they are a tad smaller. People do come in different sizes  ;)

Note Simon's (Bigredbat) Roman comparison, and note that the Crusader figure's feet are actually a bit elevated:

As I said, I've used Crusader Oscans, Thracians, and others alongside their "large" A&A and Foundry counterparts, and they go together just fine.  But if one wants Celts to tower over the Foundry Romans, one is a bit limited.

Thanks for the generous offer Nick. I realize however that I have a bunch of the Crusader ancient Spanish already in a box somewhere and can use those Unless the new Celts aren't similar.

Thanks for the input Allen and everyone else. I think I've decided that I will go with Crusader and A&A and mix in a few Renegades and other miniatures for exceptionally tall individuals.

Cheers

Steve

Missed this one; I would heartily commend the Renegade Celts.  They are great sculpts, cheap and mix well with A&A (my second favourite range).  Some will need a swordectomy*, but this is a small price to pay.

Cheers, Simon
