"Blackout" - a kind of apocalypse. On Channel 4 (UK)
« on: September 11, 2013, 02:31:38 PM »
Did anyone watch this?

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/blackout/4od

The story is based on a total failure of the UK national grid for a period of about a week, probably caused by a cyber attack. It's done in a mixture of documentary style and contributions from individual's videos.

Seemded pretty good to me - quite grim in how it depicts the rapid breakdown of much of society.

One of the few books I've read which actually scared me is called 'One Second After'.   It is a tale about a guy in a small town trying to keep his family and town alive after the US is hit by an EMP.   Truly horrifying to me.

I know my family and I would do better than most in that type of situation, but it would still be awful.

Emp will burn out all chips not in a Faraday cage or 'hardened'

My only beef with Blackout was that it took three days for riots to start, unless of course that was because there were no social sites to organise them.

One story I remember hearing about a Russian pilot who defected to the west during the cold war had to do with the scientists examining his aircraft and laughing about the fact it was still using valves rather than microchips, until of course one bought up the fact that it would still be flying after the EMP effects of nuclear weapons had fried all the Wests aircraft.
