Heroquest returns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: September 14, 2013, 05:32:38 PM »
A personal dream come true for me. This is what got me into the hobby at the start of the 1990s:

- Spanish company GameZone will create a new heroquest 25th aniversary edition.
- They have distribution rights to Spain but not to other countries, but they will release the game in multiple languages and there are plenty of spanish online shops with worldwide shipment.
- They may use a crowdfunding campaign but it's not confirmed.
- There will be initially four heroes in male and female versions.
- Furniture and tokens will be all in 3D (resin) instead of cardboard.
- The board will be reversible (two in one).
- There won't be fimirs, but there will be equivalent reptilian creatures.
- It won't be overly expensive (in line with Descent V2).

I'd consider it for the furniture alone.

This is good news, I have never had a chance to play Heroquest. I am interested, In your opinion, makes Heroquest stand out? Why should I choose Heroquest over say, Decent, Castle Ravenloft, Mageknight, or any other adventure or quest game?

the atmosphere, the fluff. The story was just great and had depth imo, even though the game was aimed at 12 year olds. the game mechanics (looking back) were a bit simple so I do wonder if they are going to change a lot. But yeah, it was definitely the atmosphere for me. It still has a sense of drama and foreboding that Descent and other adventure games never could replicate. I hope this new version will have that as well

That's what I'll be looking at.

The KS project is going to be the 25 aniversary edition, but later,in 2015,are going to launch the standard edition.
The price is going to be around 80€,with eight miniatures and furniture. The material is going to be resin.

In your opinion, [what] makes Heroquest stand out?

Here's my take on the strengths of the original HQ...

Story: To echo General Lee, I also think the story was one of the highlights of HQ. It may not have been the most original, but it did have a couple of twists, and overall, provided a solid narrative. The game actually had introductory text that established the world, described the relevant history, and defined the (obvious) threat to the Empire. Your characters weren't just a random band of adventurers - they were heroes that served the Empire and the game's missions are set in that context. The result is a narrative that progresses smoothly and gives a sense of the wider world. The writing was also decent, even if it did rely on the rather contrived use of an omniscient narrator. On the downside, the main storyline was never finished - the campaign was left open for future expansions, but the game did not last long enough for the story to conclude!

Simple, Quick, Easy: The game included a variety of actions, which were all handled by very simple mechanics. That meant the game was very easy to pick up and play. I'd also say it felt less abstracted. The game was also fairly easy for the heroes. The GM played more of a storyteller than competitor role, and did not have a renewable resource to generate new threats. That meant common sense (sticking together and exploring cautiously) was often the best strategy for the heroes!

RPG-Lite: Combine the elements above, and you get to the core of what I like about HQ. More so than later dungeon crawls like Descent, HQ is a board game that plays like an RPG. For me, the game is more about enjoying an interactive, shared story and less about outwitting the other players or overcoming deeply strategic challenges.

Others: As a simple game, HQ is a reasonable introductory game for non-gamers and kids. The simplicity also meant many people designed custom material for the game. And, of course, for those who played HQ back in the day, it also has nostalgia value.

So it will be kickstarter as opposed to indiegogo or something else. I thought that as they are only allowed to release it in Spain, even though you can purchase it outside of Spain that they MIT not be able to use that platform for the project. Then again I guess technically they aren't selling on kickstarter just getting funds and rewarding you for helping fund it. This may do even better than reaper bones IMHO.
