Why the picture of the dark elf spearmen? I'm getting a bit sceptical about this. :?

I think he copy and pasted the three pictures that appear in the gamezone web,the dark elves has no relatin with the Heroquest project.

Far less active than I used to...

Yep, signed in.  Heck I'm interested even if I just get the set as a big combination of miniatures and furniture/baddies.  I plan on doing my own dungeon crawl at some point, so I'd be fine dropping a chunk o' change on getting most of my needs in one place (I have the dungeon already).

Here's hoping this thing takes off and happens.

If you signed up they sent out a survey, which didn't work.... Then they sent out a new one which did. All it asked for was, if I remember correctly, your name and your country and if you have played HQ before. Still it's movement.

Here's my take on the strengths of the original HQ...

Story: To echo General Lee, I also think the story was one of the highlights of HQ. It may not have been the most original, but it did have a couple of twists, and overall, provided a solid narrative. The game actually had introductory text that established the world, described the relevant history, and defined the (obvious) threat to the Empire. Your characters weren't just a random band of adventurers - they were heroes that served the Empire and the game's missions are set in that context. The result is a narrative that progresses smoothly and gives a sense of the wider world. The writing was also decent, even if it did rely on the rather contrived use of an omniscient narrator. On the downside, the main storyline was never finished - the campaign was left open for future expansions, but the game did not last long enough for the story to conclude!

Simple, Quick, Easy: The game included a variety of actions, which were all handled by very simple mechanics. That meant the game was very easy to pick up and play. I'd also say it felt less abstracted. The game was also fairly easy for the heroes. The GM played more of a storyteller than competitor role, and did not have a renewable resource to generate new threats. That meant common sense (sticking together and exploring cautiously) was often the best strategy for the heroes!

RPG-Lite: Combine the elements above, and you get to the core of what I like about HQ. More so than later dungeon crawls like Descent, HQ is a board game that plays like an RPG. For me, the game is more about enjoying an interactive, shared story and less about outwitting the other players or overcoming deeply strategic challenges.

Others: As a simple game, HQ is a reasonable introductory game for non-gamers and kids. The simplicity also meant many people designed custom material for the game. And, of course, for those who played HQ back in the day, it also has nostalgia value.

Good Post.... ;)
Descent isn't a Dungeon Crawl game, for me is only a sort of skirmish game....

Was the survey just the two questions?  I was a little confused by the email I received.

Played Heroquest last week with some mates (the US version)...and honestly: found it quite boring. Let's say the experience wasn't the same as 20 years ago :D. The gameplay is just too basic, especially compared to what we're used to nowadays. I hope I'll be playing it with my son in several years, but until then it stays in the cupboard :)

Ahhhhhaha :D :D :D :D  it's to much true....
I think the nostalgia effect is the primary component, to make Heroquest one of the best memories for those who play RPG or fantasy miniatures games ....
