Colonial Naval Officers-- Painting
« on: May 18, 2008, 04:44:46 AM »
I'm working on a set of the Copplestone British Naval Officers to use as a landing party for Darkest Africa and I need some input and inspiration for uniform colors. I'm not a stickler for true historical colors as most of my DA stuff has more of a pulp feel to it. Any ideas?

Either the Blue/black rig or white tropical service uniform. I can't think of any other alternatives ???

Just in order to add some variety, you may use some khaki shades, specially if you use the Pulp officers in shorts.

Maybe they are later in time, I do not know. Mine are mostly blue only few whites.

Try the Perry's Sudan uniform guide, if you are doing 19thC. I assume early 20thC colours wouldn't vary much. The Naval officer is plate 24. Trousers could be blue or white, as could caps. Helmet could also be khaki:

Hope that's of use  :)

I had never seen that plate - I will have to spend more time looking around their site instead of just drooling and making order lists

The article was originally published some time ago in "Wargames Illustrated", to coincide with the launch of their Sudan range,  IIRC and is probably the best intro to British Sudan uniforms you could ask for - especially as it's free :)

If you can get hold of issue 29 of Wargames Soldiers and Strategy [Jan 08], it has a large feature on the 1884-5 campaign. There are loads of pics of the Perrys' collection, with several of the Naval Brigade, which will give lots more painting ideas.

Apologies for the pic's large size, BTW. I don't know how to re-size pics when linked from other sites....  :(

Not yet. I've been knee-deep in 15mm moderns and my Afica stuff has taken a back seat. Will post pics once they're done.
