TYW Army 28mm (1)

Hello friends,

inspired by the League of Augsburg,

I´m going to create a TYW Army.

I choose the "swedish-war"! (why ? - more to this in coming threads)

Because “size matters” and my will to incest time and money I choose 28mm - and not the skirmish-level.
The next important question was about the size/strength of regiments.
A TYW regiment includes a Pike Block – and the relationship from Pikes and Shot was about 1:2.

But when does a Pike-block look like a Pike-Block?
After some simulations I choose 12 pikemen as the minimum-limit. 12 pikemen means 24 shot with an additional HQ Section – officer, drummer, sergeants –  this means 40 Figures.    

And which maneuvers a regiment should be able to form?
A classic form of shot, pike, shot, a line of fire, some kind of attack wedge, a square …
 
Because of the look and the (in my eyes) lack of necessity to form a pike-line -  I want to choose a massive pike-block-stand.
Because of the necessity to move my regiments on the gaming table -  I want to choose for the shot a 4-stand solution - 2x8-Figures-stands  and 2x4-figures stands.

They're not Warlord, and I don't think they're TAG, but beyond that I couldn't say.

Except, of course, to say that they look fantastic! Are those banners handpainted?

I think they might be 1st corps 30 years war figures and I have to say they do look smashing!

I also don't recognise the manufacturer of those figures, but they are lovely dynamic figures and the paint job is very impressive. Please tell the name of the manufacturer and if those are straight from manufacturer or have you done some conversion work? Look forward to seeing more regiments and more write up.

you will find these flags in Wargames Illustrated, issue 82 from July 1994 on page 44 and 45. The flags where enlarged-color-copied and repainted by hand.
The imperial flags you can find at issue 79 form April 1994 on page 44 and 45. This issue shows the great work of Mark Allen´s TYW collection. He is doing fantastic banners.

Great, thanks! I don't game TYW, but I might eventually paint up extra command figs to "morph" my German-style Polish-Lithuanian troops into Swedes, so it's good to know about these banners.

Aiming for historical accuracy in the portrayal of TYW armies is fraught with difficulty.

You should exercise extreme caution in using the flags shown in the articles quoted, including those figures shown in the picture.

Mark Allen himself wrote a corrective article explaining that many of the illustrations featured in the articles mentioned above were most likely incorrect and probably fabrications, designed by the Zinnfiguren manufacturer K.A. Wilke to help sell his figures. see Wargames Illustrated - BUILDING A WARGAMES ARMY PART FIVE (more on the Swedes) by Mark Allen
He then goes on to list more credible swedish colours.

Hello Captaingeneral,
thanks for your reference.
When I wrote “the banners of Mark Allen are fantastic”  I meant of course – mine are not (!)    and I´m little satisfied with the results.
But with 8 Swedish and 6 Imperial Regiments and 3 banners per regiment I would need 42 historic correct banners only for the infantry and this in groups of 3 fitting together – I  surrendered immediately – and took the good looking once. 
And I fudged more … 
the flags are too big  – and– the textile of the original flags was very thick and rigid because of the embroidery. I´m not sure if they could wave like mine… my flagpoles are too long (I used them to push the pike block).
Let us see this more as a interpretation of a TYW army regiment.

Ahh Accurate Flags! yes I have exactly the same problem with my Swedish and Imperial armies at Luetzen.

I have the original article from Alte und Neue Zinnfiguren from the 70's in my collection and felt myself very smug to have a source that none of my contemporaries had.

Sadly I too, must come clean and, admit to fudging some of mine, especially when there are 25 cavalry squadrons on the Swedish side to give cornets to.

I must admit I really liked the picture of the Blue Regt and standards.

As I'm staging The Battle of Luetzen on my Birthday this month (dont ask) I'll hopefully be able to post some pics! (with flags  )
