I've started on the base coats, just trying to remember which colours I used on the first four:

I've dug the last three 'things with wheels' out; a BTR-152, a BM-21 and a Zil-131, from ICM. All will end up green'ish and looking a bit battered and muddy/dusty.

After a sometimes fiddly assembly I sprayed them with Halfords matt black primer, then a coat of Vallejo german cam black/brown followed with a coat of varnish. I picked up some MIG rust effects as part of a job lot on eBay so had a bit of an experiment session.

Enamel rust effect washed all over, with a bit of rust pigment sprinkled over it.

MIG rust pigment only, rubbed in with an old brush then sealed with pigment fixer.

On the truck I sprayed a layer of varnish over the rust, then tried a layer of hairspray, layer of acrylic bottle green, layer of hairspray, layer of olive green. Bit of wet scraping later got this

Back end. Didn't try any chipping, just left the rust. Painted the base coat for the wood and put a dark brown wash over the rusty metal bits.

That's a pretty great-looking technique you have there. Thanks for sharing it!  :)

Thanks, bit of a mash up of info from Youtube vids etc

The BM-21 Grad; this one had no enamel rust, just the pigment. A layer of varnish, layer of hairspray, layer of sand colour acrylic spray, layer of hairspray, layer of Olive green acrylic spray.
Liberal application of warm water to soften the top layers (chucked the whole thing in the sink)  then made some chips down to the rust. Let it all dry and harden up again then gave it a light sanding to show some of the sand colour. Think I prefer this to the other one.

Yeah - second one looks it's been aged. I like it too.

Those are nifty! Nice movement and very suggestive of heavy contact. :D

Cheers Earther, I've pretty much finished all the stuff I had on the go for the 'Border War', back to little helicopters next.

Finished BM-21 for my little Angolan collection.

@ Sundayhero: Thanks, I had a go at trying different techniques for rust/chipping on each of the trucks and BTRs, but ultimately I ended up dusting on a liberal amount of MIG pigments and covering up a lot of it.
