Chris Peers Future Wars question
« on: May 24, 2008, 01:54:02 PM »
For the people who have played the rules, the shooting rules say you can use aimed fire only if you make an assault move and only on tagrets within 6". Is this correct? As aimed fire is (apart from close combat) the only option to take an opponent out this seems to be a pretty short range to me.

I do not have the ruleset in my hand (I'm away from home atm), but as far as I remember, that rule only confers to a unit on assault orders. As fighters are rushing in, they cannot aim at distant targets.

I think, a fighter has to be motivated to use aimed fire (AND have located/spottted the target), otherwise only unaimed fire can be used.

I had to read through the rules twice to get hold of it, the structure of the ruleset is not too great  ;)
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Now I'm reading the rules again, and if you take it RAW, you're actually right - but this must clearly be an error, as the rules for Aimed Fire say:

Deduct 1 if:
The target is...., and at least 18 inches away from the firer.

I think the parenthesis under "Manouvre" Movement, stating (but not aimed) should be void - otherwise it makes no sense. Thats how I would play it, anyway.

And now, come to think of it:

Here and there the rules mention: Targets who are halted.

If a unit/figure does not move at all, it may of course use aimed fire. I think this is implicit; the rules do not state it eplicitly, but I guess that's the solution. So only figures on Assault orders (only up to 6" away) and figures not moving (up to LOS/weapon range) may use aimed fire.

Does that make sense? I updated the charts:
