(Bad) News from the north (Dux Britanniarum raid)
« on: October 24, 2013, 11:27:06 PM »
The following message was brought, hurriedly wrote in a very strange latin on a piece of wood, by a shepherd. The man said that the message was given to him by an angle warrior from the Wall garrison near Coriosopitum:

Ego Cedric, dux anglorum coriosopitudinensis, non recevere moneta foederati in due anni. Meum miserum homines et diripere suscipere coacta suas.

My Lord Aemilius is now thinking if it was a goog idea not to pay the foederati wages...

Two days after, a new message was received:

Tristísimi pars furari. Videtis campo proelii.

Vale et valeant optimum.

Tribune Aemilius realized that the angles were now raiding, probably tha province of Coriosopitum south of the wall, so he called on his troops and alerted the militia. Soon, news came that the raiders were returning north with cattle, and he went after the barbarians.
He found the angles near a small farm, set between a hill and a forest on the south.

And the angles route to north was hindered by the southern forest, so Cedric, the angle leader, had to choose to bypass the forest with some troops to the east and some to the west of the forest.

Tribune Aemilius son arrived from the east with his own comanipulares and a unit of warriors. Then he decided to wait for the other troops to arrive.

Cedric, on seeing the britons too, decided to split his force, some to sacort the cattle, and the rest under his own command to attack the enemy and give time to the others to flee to the north.

Aemilius, once his other troops arrived, promptly formed his comanipulares and warriors onto a shieldwall, and moved against Cedric guards and warriors, with his slingers following in his left flank.

Meanwhile, two units of militia under Gwrin moved to intercept the cattle.

And the rest of troops, a warrior and a militia unit under Marcus, moved onto the gap between the previous forces to support Aemilius.

First blood!! The slingers kill one of the angle warriors. While Cedric and his champion are on the flank, waiting to see how the battle goes on, one of his leaders choose to lead from the front!

But the other angle leader, who bypassed the forest by the west side, now charges forward to help the cattle drivers.

At last, the opposite forces clash!! Aemilius choses to lead from the rearguard, to be able to rally his force, and sent forward his champion Cynwyl to boost his shieldwall. And the first round is for the britons, who kill two angle warriors and causes six shock points, while they lost one warrior and suffer one shock point.

Meanwhile, Gwrin forces scatter the cattle and clash with the angles, killing two.

The second angle leader sees the danger to the cattle drivers and runs forward!

But what is happening with Aemilius and Cedric? The battle rages, and now is the turn for the britons to lose two more warriors. This is worrying.

But Marcus troops managed to contact the angle archers, who were scattered and out of the battle.

Meanwhile, the militia has killed one more angle warrior, and pushed back the rest. But you can see how the second angle leader has split his force, one unit regaining control of the cattle, and the other advancing to help their comrades!

These ones managed at last to check the militia advance, and caused severe loses to the british. The force under Marcus clashed with them too, causing more casualties (sorry, I was so engaged on the game that I forget to take pics). Only to say that one of the Cedric´s guard units misplaced the bottle, and one of the warriors unit did the same, so Cedric decided to withdraw. Here are the angles running to his fort on the wall!

But this became a disorganized rout when the angle morale level reached 0.

The cattle was scattered, and with the britons in pursuit, the angles left the field. But dusk prevented a succesfull pursuit.

And sadly, Marcus troops were to far away to catch the fleeing abgles too.

And this is the end. The britons lost 12 figures, and managed to retriebe the scattered cattle. The angles lost 12 figures too, but they lost the scenario. So this was a +2 victory for the britons, that will be at full strength in one month. The angles will need two months to recover.

This was the first raid of our Dux Britanniarum campaign, fought by Manuel and myself, Emilio. The campaign is set in Bernaccia kingdom, beside the Adrian Wall. We made a lot of errors, but we´ll improve with time!

Dramatis personae:
- Angles: Manuel´s polivalent warriors. Sometimes they are vikings, sometimes saxons... you only need to change the shield. Figures by Warlord, Musketeer and Gripping Beast.
- Britons: Emilio´s... britons, that is! Figures by Black tree design.
Table, hills and trees from Emlio´s collection. Cattle, other animals and hovels from Manuel´s collection.

Hope you like it.

Emilio.
