All lies - I can think of two other blogs which have been gaming in 1/48th in the last year  ;) But I whole heartedly agree that I am definitely a fringe scale.  lol
Thanks for adding it anyway, and as I said , I'd happily buy a 1/56th one and make do...

Too be honest, I've never understood why '28mm' and not 1/48th? When you think of the relative wealth of die-cast stuff (in 1/43 or thereabouts) and plastic kits... making figures for that would have been way more sensible. A tad more in the way of cost per figure, but as I recall, those HLBSC figures were quite something in comparison to most 28mm figures of the time.

Come back in five years time and scale creep will have done the job for you, HLBSC were just ahead of the curve. Admittedly the hobby is currently going through a phase of smaller and more proportionate figures but I doubt it will last. Pity HLBSC folded their tent, moderns wise as they were good looking sculpts but then with moderns the figures date rapidly and IIRC those figures weren't cheap and they had limited poses.

When the HLBS figures first came out, the only real competitors in the modern market were the TAG 'us infantry' ( the blocky 'lego men' style ones), MoFo from gripping beast and the Brittania Mogadishu range.  None of them particularly compatible in style or in some cases theme.
So I think going 40mm for their range was a gamble, based on the way everyone at the time was looking at 1/48th  as the next big thing (Graven Images 40mm all sorts,  Perry 40mm Napoleonics, North Star WW2, etc) and nowhere near the competition from 28mm that there is now.

I remember the figures being strikingly detailed in comprison to most things on the market,  but also not cheap.  Interestingly, even after a price rise,  the figures were still only £1.50-2.00 which is similar to Empress and TAG these days. Heck, in my recent attempts to track figures down most models have been far cheaper than most 28mm stuff. Although some 1/43rd die cast vehicles can be a bit pricey,  they are usually cheaper than 1/56th resin models.

I was chatting to Richard at HLBS,  and they are planning to release an ultra modern range in 1/48th later this year. It has apparently been delayed by using 3d printing to do the weapon masters.  So there is hope from my perspective ;-) It will be interesting to see how it sales against the like of Emperess, as despite my love of the scale I wouldn't put out a new range with all the 28mm competition...

A bit VHS vs Betamax in a way (or so older people tell me  ;) ). I'm not sure I'd risk them now to be honest. As Carlos says though, with some of the ranges out there well into being 30mm+ territory, it might not be long before a few people are gaming in 1/48th, although still calling it 28mm. Once a figure gets to 35mm 'foot to eye', he's 6'-ish in real terms (foot to top of head) in 1/48th scale.

There's one or two vehicle ranges as it is which look ridiculously small against some figures.

I do remember being impressed with them though, but as you say, the competition was somewhat smaller.

I think if it was me, I'd be looking at something less competitive than ultra modern, maybe something nobody else does and for which there are exploitable sources for vehicles. What that would be is beyond me though.

Agreed. The advantage to doing 40mm, 1/48 is that it would work better with 1/43 diecasts and 1/48 plastic kits. Aside from SWAT or Police type scenarios where, conceivably, you might want a few diecast cars, there doesn't seem much point for moderns. Leaving aside, quite expensive resin and multimedia kits from Gasoline, Propaganda Kompany and the like,  most of the modern stuff available is fairly dated and the only really affordable stuff comes from fairly indifferent kits by the like of Academy, Zhengdu etc. Really modern plastic kits in 1/48 are actually fairly rare. A HMMV from Tamiya and two or three modern types from Airfix. Whilst 1/48 is an increasingly popular scale for WW2 era modellers, I have seen very little on the horizon for moderns.

I suppose if you wanted to tap into the (expensive) range of Russian and Chinese 1/43 diecasts there might be a market.

I have a number of nominally 1/48 scale models and most work reasonably well with 28mm. What I really would appreciate would be a better selection of civilian cars in a consistent scale, anywhere from 1/56 to 1/50 would suit me. 1/43 really is just too big. Ideally popular British and European models of the 1960s. Given how popular things like 7TV and Kiss, Kiss Bang , Bang seem to be, it might be commercially viable. HLBSC are known for their sense of whimsy, maybe they are the chaps to carry it off.

ok, scratch off the Unimog from the list.  Should be out and available in Sept, right alongside the M41 Walker Bulldog, BTR-152 and BTR-40

Theoretically these exist elsewhere, but as Force on Force have been quiet for a time, it's good to hear alternatives are on the horizon though and look forwards to seeing them completed and for sale. I'll start saving...

Sometimes our sculptors just do stuff (me included...) and it ends up getting produced. But these should fit in well with the other stuff we are doing.

Who am I to complain!

- Patria Sisu/Patria Pasi in 1/48, the early version, so XA-200 excluded.

This would be perfect for Cold War ear peacekeeping scenarios and such, used by many nations.

- BMP variants in 1/48

That's about it :)
