How close is Maurice to Longstreet?
« on: November 25, 2013, 01:17:49 PM »
I just picked up Longstreet and am liking it so far. I understand that Maurice also uses cards. How close are the systems? I am thinking if I like LS then I might also like M. I didn't much like his previous SYW rules, and Lasalle was "OK".

there are some "Maurice lite" rules available on the Honour website for free download, I think you can have a rough idea about them with a quick read
Cheers,

Maurice is very different to Longstreet.  Some of the basics like movement and contacting enemy units use the same diagrams.  The card system is used differently with the command options in Maurice being very limited.  Cards are used to activate a single force which is a coherent force of the same basic troop types, in the same formation, in the same terrain. It is not for you if you like amore standard turn based system were every unit has an opportunity  to act.

Certainly study the Maurice Lite download as that explains the role of the cards in command and activation.

Stands are taken of in Longstreet while only entire units are removed in Maurice as it is uses a stamina system like Lasalle and Black Powder

I enjoy Maurice - see my Maurice AWI game reports - latest at

Does Maurice have the same sort of traits for commanders?

The commanders of the armies in Maurice do not have any traits.

Instead it has notables who have traits.  They can act as the commander of a force and give their traits to the unit or force they are with.  Some improve scouting,  work with cavalry, some only work with irregulars, some improve shooting or hand to hand combat.  The traits are more limited than those in Longstreet.

In a campaign each side starts with a randomly chosen notable, others may be attracted to armies based on the epic points they win in a battle, they can retire after each battle or be sacked, and killed in hand to hand combat.

That's interesting. Basically the default for commanders is "mediocre" then? (Which I like!)

Yes the commanders are simply themselves - mediocre or inspired as their luck takes them.

Maurice is also a strictly 1 v1 game, where in Longstreet you can multiple players. I love Maurice but for larger games I use Mr Mustafa's larger scale Might and Reason. All great games.
