French Troops in America AWI
« on: December 29, 2013, 04:04:21 AM »
Does anyone have a listing of units in America as part of the French "interaction" with Britain.  I had read recently that France supplied some 90 percent of the powder used by the Yankees.  It inspired me to add some new troops.

Osprey have a very comprehensive Men at Arms book by Rene Chartrand, illustrator Francis Back, no 244 covering "The French Army In The American War Of Independence".
Most of the French regular units that fought against the British during the AWI were not actually in America. There were large contingents in the West Indies, India and the Mediterranean(Mahon & Gibralter). The Osprey book only lists 4 regiments of regular infantry serving in the United States, these were;-
Soissonois, Bourbonnois, Saintonge & Royal-Deux-Points.
 The regular artillery also provided 1 battalion and 6 companies in the United States.
 There were also the "volunteer" units- principally Lazaun's Legion(originally the 2nd Legion of the Volontaires Etranger De La Marine). There would also have been some small contingents of Marines shipped ashore in landing parties.
Note the Royal-Deux-Points were a German regiment and wore a sky blue coat faced crimson(1776 regulations) cnanging to yellow facings in the 1779 regulations.

Rochambeau's corps during the 1781 Yorktown campaign contained more than the four regiments cited above and included the following four brigades :

* Brigade de Bourbonnois under the Marquis de Laval : Rgts Bourbonnois & Royal Deux-Ponts - 2 btns each.

* Brigade de Soissonois under the Marquis de Maime : Rgts Soissonnois & Saintonge - 2 btns each.

* Brigade d'Agenois under the Marquis d'Audechamp : Rgts Agenois & Gatinois - 2 btns each.

* Brigade de Touraine under the Marquis de Pondeux : Rgt de Touraine - 2 btns.

The Marines and Légion de Lauzun were brigaded separately under the Marquis de Choisy.

Two years earlier in 1779, a French force of about 2,800 infantry was present at the siege of Savannah in Georgia, comprising detachments from Regts Agenois, Armagnac, Auxerrois, Cambresis, Champagne, Dillon, Foix, Gatinois, Hainault and Walsh along with colonial troops from Guadeloupe and Martinique.

So there are plenty of units to choose from depending on which part of the war you wish to do.
