Ludus "Media Nocte Patre" - *NOT Theokoles added* 13 FEB 2014
« on: January 05, 2014, 12:49:47 AM »
Amongst some of the things Santa brought me this year were some 28mm gladiators. I am finding it a bit weird going down to 28mm from 54mm and realise that I may need some new glasses......

left to right: Blacktree "Murmillo", Crusader "Secutor", Crusader "Retiarius" and Foundry "Thraex"

I'll post more as i go.

Regards

Lovely looking stuff.  If that's you strugglin' to paint...want to swap eyes?  lol (to be fair, I've needed glasses for a while now...)

Very nice transition back to the true scale.  ;)

I'm intrigued by the Blacktree murmillo who I have looked at many times and have considered adding to my own ludus.

His Pata (gauntlet sword thingy) is very cool and borders on the fantastic.

He appears a little slimmer than the Crusader stuff.

Again, great work.

I thought the same about the Pata, not really historically correct, but "looks" the part! The Blacktree minis are a pretty good match for Foundry but aren't quite as bulky as the Crusader minis. He's also stuck straight onto the base ( I cut off the slotta tab) so he appears a tiny bit shorter but I like the detail and the pose.

YES....   o_o

Nice, are they all Crusader or some BTD?  I need a decent Dimachaerus figure.

Thanks for the comments.

Nice, are they all Crusader or some BTD?  I need a decent Dimachaerus figure.

Yes the last 4 are all Crusader miniatures. The Dimachaerus is quite nice although his breast-plate and lack of arm protection is a little off ( but I like the "sports" helmet). The other one from Crusader isn't bad but the helmet is massive and spoils the look a little.
The BTD Dimachaerus is Ok ( I have one ready to paint), although the pose seems a little odd. He is bare-headed but has dual arm protection and leather thongs wrapped around his legs.
I'll paint it up soon.

There is a particular illustration of a Dimachaerus in Nossov's book that I really like...don't see any models like it though.  I'll see if I can scan it and show it off.

I think it is based off of this:

Hah, found it!  I think this is it...looks good to me:

Interesting picture. I'll hunt around for a suitable mini for conversion......

Just completed two more gladiators, a Scaeva Murmillo and a Gladiatrix Thraex. Both are Foundry miniatures ( the gladiatrix has a scratch-built shield)

Group shot so far

I recently painted up that same Scaeva Myrmillo...what  genuinely lovely figure.  Where did you get your shield?

I'll point out that that figure had its first game over the weekend, and defeated an exhausted Thraex (succumbed to exhaustion about the 5th turn), who was given missio.  So he's off to a good start!
