Abu's British Armour (19 March update)
« on: January 24, 2014, 01:20:14 AM »
Dingos.

And two Fireflies. Not sure what vehicles were historically named as below, but I thought they were perfect for these tanks.

I love them!

Well done.

Those are great! Are they 20mm?

Thanks, and yes, they are 20mm.  The mud is pretty much just MIG brand pigments and fixative straight out of the containers, applied as Rx'ed, no real trick to it. It's a mix of "Europe Dust" and "Light Dust."

Add four Shermans to join the Fireflies and complete my two planned Sherman troops for BGO.

Very nice work. I like the colour you have used on the Shermans.

Cheers,

Helen

Great job! I think the small colour variation really brings them to life. One-color tanks can quite easily become very monotone and boring. The dusting looks great too! Especially on the fireflys

Great paint jobs on the Shermans and Fireflies.

If you don't already know the tanks you are modelling are 3 Royal Tank Regiment (3RTR) - the No 52 on the red square shows this.  If you want to be pickie (and I'm not suggesting you change them) all tank names in 3 RTR started with the letter "C".

51 would be 23 Hussars - information on names scarce - Recce Troop Stuarts had names beginning with "G" - Grind, Grumble, Grunt for example, C Squadron used City names eg "City of Liverpool" (other squadrons not known)

53 would be 2nd Fife and Forfar Yeomanry.  RHQ tanks St George, St Andrew, St Patrick, St David; A Squadron used the names of constellations, B Squadron used names of race horses like Brown Jack and Why Worry, C squadron used the names of battles.

Did the 11th armoured division use M4A1 76mm shermans? I didnt think they ever had 76mms.

Those Shermans are painted amazingly! What colours did you use?

Thanks Dobbie, and you're right: no, they didn't get any 76s. Strictly speaking I believe they should all be M4A4s. Hate to be an arms-length war gamer, but to paraphrase the former head strategerist of  certain "decider", I'm afraid I'm doing this project with the tanks I've got, not necessarily the tanks I'd like to have  ;).

I used Tamiya XF062 Olive Drab lightened with some Deck Tan for the paint.

dadlamassu - Thanks for the info on the naming conventions, in the absence of that i had just picked names I thought would be cool if I were naming my own tank. "Jenny the Creme Cracker" - LOL.

I'd like to do some RMASG and some 7th Armored in the future with a higher degree of verisimilitude. Any advice?

I might be tempted to do a little weathering over the decals for a more natural look, but otherwise excellent :)

One thing about doing so many vehicles stage-by-stage is that when you finish, you tend to pull a lot of stuff off the painting bench at once.  Today's haul:

- 4 x M5 Halftracks
- 1 x Cromwell
- 1 x M10 Wolverine
- 4 x M5 Stuarts
- 3x Bren Carriers

As seen in their natural habitat.

Here are few selects from the lot.

Bren - Pretty much a PSC out of the box.

Halftrack

Stuart

Wolverine. Armourfast, so why not make it filthy.

Cromwell
