Fritzys new old London Town
« on: June 13, 2008, 10:51:10 AM »
Hi all,
After drooling over Malamutes' Town I decided it was time I had a few of my own. So I dug out my knife and attacked all the bits I had to hand, Unfortunately I ran out of foam card and time. Another problem was that I got a bit carried away with my ideas and built 3 and 3 quaters of them. It happened while one was drying I just had to keep cutting and, well you all know what it's like.
My first is an End terrace, 2 story, which will have a yard out back with coal bunker, and privvie (toilet).

Next I did the same building but doubled it up. This will be bricked up as soon as I finish this.

Next I wanted a slum type building made of clapboard, with boarded windows, rotting wood etc. After I  finish the brickwork above I will be doing the spacers for the planking.

Lastly I have another building to go with the last, It is a warehouse and rooms on the left, with doorway for a hoist, and a shop of ill repute ,with living quaters above. This will look out over docks, river or canal with a second hoist for the warehouse overlooking it. I'm unsure how to finish the back of the building however apart from putting the doorway for the hoist. Any suggestions would be gratefully considered.

The houses of a more respectable area will be surrounded by pavement, whereas downtown buildings are cobbles.
Now i just need to get some (lots of) balsa and foam board.
I will place more photos as they progress. The slum type have got my interest most at the moment though. This means I need to paint my Holmes and Watson.

Cheers

Fritzy

Those look like a great start! I've wanted to do this myself but really lack the room at the moment.

For the back of your canlside building, take a look at some real ones. Here are a few shots I've found of the big canal buildings in Nottingham.

Thanks Dewbakuk,
The waterfront one is just right. I want versions of the canal and waterfront as a place for Moriaty to slip in and out of London.
  Cheers

Well that's another building to add to the list written on a kitchen roll lol lol

Looking good Fritzy.
You have cracked on quickly. At this rate you will have built Old London town within days. :)

Nice start. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the rest. And can't wait to see the whole town together.

Thanks for the encouraging comments,
Thunderchicken, I layed every brick by hand using the new tool for keeping them straight from the price drop channel. lol   No, OK then, I used printed card sheets from Metcalfe. They are for railway scenery and in oo/HO scale.

Looks good, better than I could cope with.
Not a criticism, but I'm only used to terraced housing in the north where you only see the gable end on the end of a row, generally I've obly seen terraces with the roof ridge running along the whole street.

Looks Like your off to a good start Fritzy. Good luck with this project. You might want hunt down"Sherlock Holmes in London "by Charles Viney it's basicly a collection of old photos of places in London that feature in holmes stories . It would probably give you more ideas for buildings and miscelanious(sp?) details than you could practicaly use.
