Looking for miles (knights) 1170-1210 in 28mm
« on: January 28, 2014, 02:06:52 AM »
I'm probably asking the unfulfilable – I'm looking for miles (knights) 1170-1210 in 28mm. What ranges can I use, and what are compatible?

I know of Essex Miniatures and Irregular Miniatures – but my recollection of both is that they are 25mm.

I want historically accurate, preferably non-Crusade, but I'll use historically accurate Crusade if necessary, but historically accurate for 1170-1210.

There are loads available for earlier (usable a poor knights or sergeants), and later (with knee plates and great helms). I need, the bit in-between.

You're likely out of luck with this one. The most common features of that specific period, like flat or round topped helmets, often with face masks, are hard to find in 28mm. The Fireforge plastic sets contain a few of these, so perhaps you can swap a couple of heads.
Mirliton is the only company I can think of with one or two specific figures in their Medieval ranges. Other than that I'd take a look at some later period ranges (Curteys and Gripping Beast for example) and pick out the sergeants or poorer knights.

One or two in the baron Wars range, right at the end of your period

I'd go with Lowtardog's suggestion, though they are as he says, right at the end of your period.

Darrell.

Indeed, there are some usable figs in that range, didn't think of it. However, if not to delve into a debate on scale, those old Citadel models are quite small compared to most other and more recent ranges. They'll mix with Essex and Irregular, but I take it that was out of question?

And speaking of bad memory, completely forgot to mention Black Tree Design. They have a range specifically for the 3rd and 4th Crusade, almost a perfect fit, if the range's a bit small. I know there's a lot of bad talk about BTD around, personally, though, I had only positive experiences, and the models are very nice. Maybe worth a try?

Thanks for the suggestions. I already have a few of the foundry minis - they are nice, but are too limited in what I'd have to buy pack-wise to get what I need out of them.
I have now ordered a pack of Templars from Fireforge, and I'll see what I can come up with from those. I'll be taking a look at Mirliton while I wait for the Fireforge box to arrive.
In terms of Black Tree... I like the minis, but have had very mixed experiences from them - some orders arrive quickly but with errors, some arrive absolutely as ordered but months (after much prodding and hassling) late... I have had some orders from them on time and correct though. I quit ordering from them about five years ago. Too much of a mixed bag for me to try again unless the consensus from several people is that they have got it together.

Curteys Miniatures are currently reworking the 13th Century knights to have plug in heads that will take the range of figures into  tte late 12th Century.
These should be ready in the month or so.

I've just had a look at the Curteys' site, and I have to say, that will be excellent!

It would be good to see a few more miniatures made for this period by other companies. :) Good luck with your quest

Take a look at Barony Miniatures

http://www.baronyminiatures.com/

The knights come with two head options, only one of which is a helmet.

Gripping beast has early crusades figures that would work for this. Black Tree Design has figures with the appropriate helms and so forth as well.

Can I also add Crusader Miniatures Late Crusaders range. There are some minis with a face mask. These are the ones that I used for Richard I and Philippe II

I agree wholeheartedly with that. I also reckon the Foundry 'Barons War' stuff is in reality a bit too 'fantasy' (they are ex citadels, after all)

It is a real shame about the Blacktree 'issues' as they put me off ordering from that range of knights. IMHO, their sculpts really look nice, and better than some of their competitors...
