Anybody played Legions of Battle by Crusader Publishing?
« on: January 31, 2014, 10:49:22 AM »
I stumbled across this and naturally googled for more info, battle reports, etc. Absolutely nothing. Even their own forum has just one topic.

http://www.crusaderpublishing.com/LegionsofBattle.php

It's a long shot, but any info on this would be very welcome. It sounds just what I am looking for.

I have a set but not played it, the rules are solid however what gave me personally a headache was how to work out points for types of troops as they are generic with optional builds, I think you would spend a good while working thorugh it and so it went back on the pile  ;D

When you say back on the pile, did you buy a physical copy, it appears to be download only at the moment?

Also, I scanned the table of contents on the web page and I could not see any evidence of psychology rules in there. Does the game allow for "scary" troops - undead, daemons, etc?

I guess if it's a system where you generate your own units, then that would be something you could account for in the points system?

Likewise just had a look at the contents page, fast play sheets etc - closest I can see to a morale system is 'unsteady' units, so not much to go by. Shame there isn't more info available since otherwise it looks interesting.

Mayhem have a unit-generation system too, I believe, and I think there's more information about that set about than there is for these.

I have picked this up recently and started writing up some Orcs and Goblins (as you do).

Moral is dealt with via T&L (training and leadership) stat, Terror exists as a trait, but basically is a defence against units charging you (if you fail a T&L test then you cannot charge the unit with terror).

It does look like a really nice system, can't wait to give it a go!

Has anyone on here managed to write any forces they would like to share?

Bought the download. After a quick flick through it doesn't look too bad. I think they tried to preserve too many of Warhammer's steps in combat resolution, but small potatoes. It also streamlines many things, that I liked the look of. It almost seems like a hybrid of Warhammer and Warlord Games' pre-20th-C trio of games, maybe leaning more towards the latter, which is not a bad thing in my book.

I dunno if the unit creation rules look too complicated. I think you just need to sit down for a while, with a basic racial standard of stats (some are provided), start converting your troop choices, and tot up the costs.

Though I still have to get around to that in Mayhem, so easier said than done. ;D

I've had these rules for a while but not yet tried them. I had a printout from what might have been the playtest or beta (?) set. Northstar had a few printed copies on sale last month and I bought a copy of that also.

They seem like a good set of rules. Some good design elements. Nothing I can recall as seeming "wrong", unlike some other rulesets I own.  :)

Are the models individually based or are the rules based around stands of troops?

To repeat the question in the title - has anybody played these yet?

I quite like Crusaders Ancients rules and so am inclined to give these a go as well
