Newbie Questions: Napoleonic Royal Marines
« on: February 07, 2014, 01:41:19 PM »
I am very new to Napoleonic, and feel I am straying into an area I could get a lot of criticism for getting it wrong- (Napoleonic players have a reputation for being 'button-counters' I don't know enough of them to know if this as a fair reputation, or utterly unjust) and so I thought I would check some details first.

Background details

I am proposing making a Royal Navy/marine force for Sharp Practice. I have ordered the figures I need form Brigade Games. The marines come with a three man command section -I presume an officer, a sgt and a drummer- but no standard. The pack also comes with lots of marine heads to be fitted to Victrix's line infantry bodies.

Here is a link to Brigade Games http://brigadegames.3dcartstores.com/Napoleonic-British-Marine-Heads-and-Command-Figures_p_3319.html

So the question is do I use the Victrix standard bearer as a marine Standard bearer, and if so will he have the same hat as the marines (A kind of top hat). Or perhaps marines don't carry standards...

Also- how many standards would there be in a unit- if any. Most line infantry units I have seen pictures of seem to have two standards per unit- one with a union flag and one with what I think is a regimental standard.

Do flags/standards make any difference in Sharps Practice?

And finally- if they do have standards, what do they look like?

I am looking forward to you answers

The quick and simple answer is no standards. Just make a small change and have him carry a boarding pike or boat hook. Simples

I am 99% certain there are no rules for flags in SP. ( Muscians yes, but no flags)

Check out Captain Bloods thread for his Royal Marine conversions. YOu may get some good tips there:

Thanks Guys- Just the info I needed

captain Bloods stuff is lovely- I might have to rip off copy his his ideas with the backpacks and pony tails- it looks the buisness- although I doubt mine will be painted as brightly or as well as his.
