Hovok Skirmish Plastic Miniatures - blast from the past
« on: February 11, 2014, 10:26:48 PM »
On a whim I picked up a copy of Havok Skirmish, a little known wargame that came out in 1997.
Designed to break into the Warhammer kiddy market, but despite being picked up by the likes of Argos it bombed.

It came with prepainted plastic miniatures but I picked it up to try out the rules. The rules are crap really but what surprised
me were the miniatures. Not brilliant but not bad given their age, remember these are from 17 years ago

Might be worth a repaint and they are now very rare. Remember seeing toy shops dumping the stuff at 80% off but never bothered to pick any up.

Thanks for unknowingly identifying that damn miniature that's being sitting in my desk for years now! Mine was repainted by the previous owner and looks way better than the original  ;D

I've got some of their aliens too - the guys with the big scythes instead of hands.

Looks like a precursor to Heroscape stuff, bases look the same also.

Never got any of them, wasn't interested in them.
A mate got into them big time, though - but he was 10 at the time.  I was 29. :D

It does indeed look like something Heroscape also tried to get to fly.

Glad to have been of service  8)
These figures pre date Heroscape by quite a bit (7 years I believe) and really proves quality was either very good for these or didn't move on in those 7 years.

There are some interesting articles on the web about Havok. The biggest problem seems to have been the practice by retailers like Argos of only supplying
the box sets randomly. So you couldn't specify a faction you might be collecting, a crazier concept than the random booster/collectable nonsense practiced today  ;D

I have so much of this. It was way cheaper than Warhammer and easier to find in the shops. Whenever we went out somewhere, I was allowed 1 box (especially when they were reduced!).
Games Workshop was something of a luxury, but I used to get that from car boots!

The rules for this game were god awful, but I have fond memories of playing it when I was 7 or 8 :)

The tanks were pretty good, especially when Beatties were flogging them off at less than £1 a box.

I thought they were great for the time! Hold up well now with a nice paint job, pretty sure they are Bob Naismith sculpts.

Great game and very cheap to get.

I have an almighty tonne of them in a box from when I was a kid that I've kept thinking to stick up for sale as I want shot of the lot.

Got some of those Large Nexus (blue?) tanks and a bunch more of the mini stug type green tanks etc, loads of infantry and bots.

Have some of the freaky aliens too which were meant to be apart of a third faction that never really took off.

I flogged mine on ebay a few years back. The tanks and a few of the infantry which didn't get much of a release (can't remember which ones now) went for good prices especially as I'd picked them up cheap as Beatties cleared them .

Don't know what the markets like now but it might be worth a punt.

Love those Naismith sculpts!  How did I miss this game?  Was it just a UK thing?
