Spanish cemetery
« on: June 19, 2008, 09:01:51 AM »
Question for the SCW specialist.

In spite of the inability to get the needed materials from the US, I still plan to finish my Spanish village/town.
David of TM terrain might come to the rescue, but obviously it won't be ready for Crisis which is a shame. Johan and I still hope to have it ready by next year.

One of the buildings is (of course) a church. Did Spanish churches in the 20s' and 30s' have cemeteries next to the church itself? Or were they mosty located outside of the village?
What kind of headstones would be most 'popular'?.

The only pictures Ive been able to find are of a huge Madrid cemetery (modern) and a smaller one in Barcelona which certainly aren't typical for what I'm looking for.
Many thanks for any help.

In the part of spain I know (Costa Blanca) there aren't headstones but walls in which the corpses are placed. But i guess our spanish members can tell you more.

Likewise, I'm only familiar with Andalucia. Many Spanish churches tend to form the focal points in many towns and villages and there just isn't room for an adjoining churchyard. Most cemeteries seem to be on the edge of the settlement concerned.

The cemeteries I have seen tend to be walled and gated in a similar style to the ones seen in many spaghetti westerns (oddly filmed in Spain in most cases). This may not be the case in all of Spain, or indeed Andalucia as a whole, just the ones I've seen.

Headstones range from the ornate memorials and mini-mausoleums in local stone or white marble to more simple headstones. Depending on fashion, stones could be flat on the ground, or upright.

Note:- Whitewashing is a recent thing in Spain, walls etc were more usually an off-white colour or beige before the tourist boom of the 70's.
