NK69 - Seraph Protocol and Deadly Shadows in Guangzhou
« on: February 19, 2014, 10:50:21 PM »
Following a tip here, I picked up Pulp Alley to adapt to cyberpunk skirmishes. We played our first game last night, working out the core mechanics of combat, Fortune cards, Perils, and Plot Points.

Part 1: http://stalker7.wordpress.com/2014/02/18/nk69-seraph-protocol/

Part 2: http://stalker7.wordpress.com/2014/02/19/deadly-shadows-in-guangzhou/

First Impression: While I misunderstood a couple points, the character creation is excellent, the simultaneous combat straightforward and effective, the rules system very robust and reliable. Sure, things are abstracted and cinematic. If detail and realism are your thing, this isn't for you, but if you want to play quick, fun games with a handful of your interesting character figs, this is a sure winner. We're definitely playing this again.  And again.

Great battle reports, even better miniatures and short fiction  ;)

Thanks much. Fumbling die rolls and double-checking the rules in a 6-turn game doesn't make fascinating reading. The Police kept tripping over their own feet and lost badly. The Suliya Kova/Tiny brawl was the only highlight in an otherwise very unglamorous mission.

Pretty cool report. I think I might puck up pulp alley.

Thanks all. I found answers to my noob mistakes on the PA forum, (very helpful, they are) so I'm confident our next game will run smoother. And there will be a 'next game' for sure. PA is engaging, simple without being simplistic, and very entertaining.

I'm already looking forward to out next game night.

Thanks for sharing the cool battle report.  :-*

I see all these awesome sci-fi settings and it makes me want to build a new table... must resist...  ;D

Commissar - I'll write up a First Impressions Review soon, but in the meantime, I'm very pleased with my purchase. I'm going to get my $$ worth out of this, and more. I'm already eye-ing my extensive PA fig collection (Post Apoc, that is) and thinking how easy an adaptation would be. (Desolation Alley? Damnation Alley?)

Like I said, the mechanics are simple and robust enough to accommodate nearly any setting. All I have to do is tweak terminology, maybe create some new equipment. The Fortune/Peril cards work across genres and are more applicable to a Fallout/STALKER setting than straight up sci fi.

I haven't gotten this much of a charge out of a rule set since... VOR.

That's saying a lot. I loved Vor. So I just ordered the rules and Parlous island expansion.

VOR was such a great game. The figs were wonky and cartoonish, the fluff cheesy as hell, but we had such fun with it.

Pulp Alley is more abstract, more character-driven and cinematic. But I like the same way.

I have a suspision where you got the idea... ;)

But great to see you jumped in and had a great time. Pulp Alley is easy to love, because it can be used for virtually ANYTHING. If you are interested to see what adaptations I made to the rules for the Cyberpunk genre, PM me and I will send you a copy.

Guilty as charged, your Honor.  lol

I want to see those mods, but need to get a firm grasp on the regular rules before I go breaking erm, tweaking them. I'll run the next scenario for Tues' session and see how it goes.
