Virus defrosts after 30,000 years in ice
« on: March 04, 2014, 05:56:41 AM »
A news story with post apoc possibilities.

After 30,000 years of being frozen, a virus has thawed and activated

Quote
An ancient virus has come back to life after lying dormant for at least 30,000 years, scientists say.

It was found frozen in a deep layer of the Siberian permafrost, but after it thawed it became infectious once again.

The French scientists say the contagion poses no danger to humans or animals, but other viruses could be unleashed as the ground becomes exposed.

I saw that earlier, pretty crazy.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Some years ago I saw a report that the (then) proposed extention to a London Tube line had to be diverted, because it would have gone through a KNOWN plague pit, from the Black Death, which was STILL active!!!!!
My worry is that at a time when about a third of the population was dropping dead from plague, how many people kept accurate records of ALL of the graves?

I was just checking to see if this had been posted. It could easily be another PA cause!

There'll be a kickstarter using this as a premise within the week...

Hmn, though is there any post-apocalyptic settings who do? Its not something that I know's been covered. Perhaps a plague originating from the subways like's been mentioned (or even something like the Metro 2034 setting. The survivors retreated to the subways, only to uncover a pre-war plague years after the apocalypse. ...Ah wait, that's Metro 2034's plot). =P

 lol

Actually there's quite a good movie called The Thaw. It uses a parasite rather than a virus but the premise is pretty much the same.

Ah, the recently released on DVD, Blood Glacier!

Excellent movie.  I picked it up on the day of release (yep, hardcore fan is me  ;) ).

As a non-German, the civil servant reminded me of Angela Merkel.
