Poundland has some toy cars that can be used for Sci-fi vehicles. They’re not huge, I’ll think they’ll make good vans or with a bit of work the back skip/box comes off and the front could be used for a tractor unit of a larger truck.

Can't post photos the normal way 'cause I'm stuck on mobile for the moment, and mobile is a POS for this sort of link juggling, but here's links to pics:

It's a plastic battery powered emergency lantern, bought for $2 at a "99 Cents Only" chain store (yes, you read that correctly; they've been pulling that crap for awhile now). Good for a sci-fi gubbin like a power generator or escape pod, I figure.

I popped some batteries in it to test it's lantern-ness, and it is surprisingly bright, though IMO unusable as-is, as it is omnidirectional and undiffused. There's simply no way to have it anywhere in your field of view without it putting a cigarette hole in your retina. Still, I will be salvaging the LED strips and reverse engineering the circuit when I take it apart, as they may well be useful for other projects.
History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

Just picked up a die-cast farm tractor for £1.50 in The Works at lunchtime. Looks pretty much ideal for 28mm use

They look fantastic. How are they holding up to paint?

I am not going to paint them. I have tried before and it all flaked off. I am probably just going to spray them with Matt varnish to take the shine off them.

What of using a plastic paint/primer, say Krylon?

Just seen this on FB  Could be used for spots, rivets, etc.

Yup, I use this too, works a treat!  A bit of oractice and you can make tiny spikes, and blobs and such. It can be pushed around a bit too to make shapes.

Those ships look very cool.

Sadly, wrong scale for me.

In the USA, Dollar Tree has Batman vehicles for sale, for $1.00.  They're made by Hot Wheels, and some are quite nice.  Others, from the movies, are of dubious quality, in my humble opinion, but your may think differently.

Scored an original Batmobile for cheap, and it looks to be good for true, 15mm figs, I suspect.

My local Aldi (here in the UK) is selling rolls of artificial turf, 1mx2m, for £6.99 each. Unusually, the 'turf' is actually a fairly fine flock in a mid-green not dissimilar to some industrial carpets, so very suitable as a gaming mat. At that price, they're either usable as-is or hackable into tiles. I'm thinking of the latter, with some paint and/or mastic detailing for roads/rivers, etc.
