Good afternoon,

I am gradualy working my way through 67 of the new Empress modern Chinese PLA, USMC, Seals and DEVGRU.
I have been looking for painted pictures of the models but without success.

Have you painted yours? - if yes, please post some pictures here.

Have you got any links to painted versions?

Not Empress, but Khurasan Miniatures have painted examples of their 15mm SEAL team 6 on their website for inspiration. Actually going to start painting those myself tonight.

My understanding of your post Mick is that you want pictures posted of Empress Kickstarter figures?

I was trying out a new camera the other day so took some very experimental pictures to get used to focus length etc.

So here they are.

The uniform is my homage to Generation Kill. Wrong uniform sculpt but I wanted a USMC recce unit so had some fun. Rivet counters walk away.

Here are my WIP pictures

DEVGRU
I have eight done to this stage. They are OK but dont look "digital".

USMC in Jungle Marpat and Boonie Hats
I have 22 of these done to this stage. As with the Devgru, they are OK from a distance but dont look "digital".
I am pleased with the jungle bases.

Chinese PLA and SF
These are the first four attempts at Chinese. I have been experimenting with grey dots to get a digital camo effect.

Mick,

Try stippling the paint for MARPAt. Actually it works for all digital and dot type camo, including the Chinese version. Easier if you use the paint undiluted and let it dry a fraction before applying. Nice work on all the minis, both yours and Paul's.

Some very nice paintjobs there. Camo schemes fill me with dread so it's great to see examples like this. Modern patterns seem to have fewer painting guides than WWII patterns as I've been trying to figure out paints for AOR2 with only minimal success.

Mick, those DEVGRU are looking great!

Here are some Seals in Frogman gear.
These are almost black with some navy blue mixed in for the wetsuit and some turquoise mixed in for the fins and breathing apparatus.
The mask glass is metallic silver mixed with turquoise. Faces need some improvements under the eyes.

Painting Multicam

The key to getting it to look right is to look at photographs of real uniforms. I found a picture of the pattern on the internet and enhanced it in Photoshop so that the colours are much brighter. I do not know the pattern repeat but I would guess that the picture is about a square metre of fabric. Here it is, in my Flickr gallery.

The base colouring is a mix of brownish khaki, green, khaki yellow and sand colours. I used Vallejo US Field Drab 70.973, Luftwaffe Camo Green 70.823, Middlestone 70.882 and Iraqi Sand 70.819. You could substitute other colours as the exact shades are not vital.
Paint the whole figure in Middlestone, and then add blobs of Green and Field Drab. Next, drybrush the whole thing with Sand.
Compare the result with photographs and adjust until it looks right. Using very dilute paint add more patches of Middlestone, Green and Sand until you are happy with the result.
Then I added small dots and squiggles in “almost white” (possibly GW Bleached Bone mixed with GW Skull White) and black (GW Chaos Black). Note that on the real uniforms, these appear as horizontal groups of dots and squiggles.

For my US Army that I painted a couple of years ago, I used applied Army Painter very thinly with a brush to black line the details. More recently, I have used GW Devlan Mud wash as it is more pleasant to use and clean the brushes afterward. I suggest that you dilute the wash and apply in thin layers, until you are happy with the result. When I first did the figures, I also painted the parts of the weapons in camouflage colours. Unfortunately this looks wrong and makes it very difficult to see what they are carrying. I repainted them using black with a small amount of GW Chainmail.

DEVGRU - Special Seals Desert Cam
These were painted with Vallejo Iraqi Sand and then I added horizontal squiggles of earth (Vallejo 70.921 English Uniform or Vallejo 70.873 US Field Drab).
I have then gone back and added dots of Iraqi Sand to try to make the earth squiggles more "digital".
Shadows were added with GW washes (GW Devlan Mudor the newer one GW Agrax Earthshade).

USMC Marpat Jungle
These were painted in earth (Vallejo 70.921 English Uniform or Vallejo 70.873 US Field Drab).
Next I added horizontal tiger stripes of jungle green (GW Kabalite Green with a little dark military green mixed in to tone it down a bit).
I have then gone back and added dots of earth to try to make the green stripes more "digital".
Shadows were added with GW washes (GW Devlan Mudor the newer one GW Agrax Earthshade).

Chinese PLA 2007 Pattern Digital Urban Camo
The figures were painted in mid grey.
Then big blobs of dark military green were added (Vallejo 70897 Bronze Green or similar).
Next small blobs of earth (Vallejo 70.921 English Uniform) were added.
Then I dotted in light grey (Vallejo 72.049 Stonewall Grey) covering the edges of the green and earth to get a digital effect.
Lastly, shadows were added with GW washes (GW Devlan Mudor the newer one GW Agrax Earthshade).
