I think that he is referring to the difficulty in repeating the same, very intricate at times, paint scheme over a whole unit of figures.
A real friend shall tell you not to do it as painting Nappies is terrifying, to me at least.

but the way he layers all these shades on top of the others, a few buttons and laces more shouldn't be a bother

They got my vote in LPL8 - even if they were Brit Napoleonics.  IMHO the French have got far nicer uniforms.
