40K Kill Team Rules?
« on: April 30, 2014, 02:07:24 AM »
Anyone ever try these rules? They seem to be official(?) small scale skirmish rules for the 40K universe. Reading the rules (a little bit) a kill team consists of:

0-2 Troops
0-1 Elites
0-1 Fast Attack

A kill team must consist of at least four non-vehicle models. One of which must be your leader and three must be 'specialists'.

Kind of a Mordheim for 40K?

Anyway here is the link if anyone is interested:

A little while ago,  when i was considering doing a futuristic skirmish game that involved some type of Special forces/commando unit doing all kinds of missions, somebody pointed the Kill Team Rules out to me. That idea still has not fully departed my thoughts so i am quite happy to get my hands on them. Tanx  8)

These rules, with additional missions and characters used to be included in some issues of White Dwarf (back in the day), They used to put up a range of stuff for this when they supported it officially.

We played them a year or so ago. They can be fun but there are some weird quirks that get thrown up.

e.g. Because each figure is a unit, even if a load are bunched together, you can only target one man with an assault weapon.

The already dubious force balance goes right out of the window. It does shake things up a bit, though, and makes you look at the game with a fresh pair of eyes. Some units that are ineffective in a regular game have their uses in Kill Team.

We have started using 2nd edition (with forces limited to 400 points and 20 figs) for our skirmish games. It just seems to work better.

Not much needs to be changed with it. We got the idea when playing Necromunda and realising that it's essentially 2nd Ed with individual figures instead of squads. The close combat rules from 2nd work much better in skirmish than in massed battles. We ruled that squads have to be bought as published (i.e. minimum number of figures and maximum number of special weapons etc.). This is tricky for the likes of IG but we wanted players to field cinematic elite types rather than gaining dozen of shots etc.

Only just spotted the link you used. Kill Team was being sold as a separate rules supplement by GW themselves recently. It's completely "official". Not sure if it's been affected the news in the last couple of days about Edition 6.5 or 7 or whatever it is. Anyway, point is, GW have published KT rules for at least the last two editions of the game.

I only played a few games on afternoon.
Orks vs Nids.

We had fun. It was fast so we played a few games in the time it would normally take us to barely played one full game.

The rules are published in the Battle Missions sourcebook.

Not too inclined to play it again, since I have since discovered better sci-fi skirmish games.

but it's fine if you want an easy game using some 40k models.

I used to play the old kill team rules, they are kinda fun.

I liked the combat patrol rules better though.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, the rules sound interesting especially as Legion1963 mentioned, if you want to play a commando type game.

Thanks hummus, I'll look up Killzone (is that the old Grenadier game?).
