15mm Dark Age Village
« on: July 12, 2008, 04:28:21 AM »
Hi,

Imore often or not lurk around here but I just thought I'd delurk and share some photos of my latest piece of terrain. It's a dark age/early medieval villiage I made as a BUA for DBA.

I like that a lot, the buildings are nice but my favorite bit is the duck pond. 8)

That's a really nice piece, Barry.
Love the attention to detail on the rickety fence enclosure and the gate. The trees are great too.
Are the buildings also scratch-built?

You should de-lurk more often  ;)

Second that. You have a strong sense for details which creates a very atmospheric piece of terrain. That's how I imagine a Dark Age village. Top-notch!

Thank You Gentlemen.

Captain Blood, yes, the buildings are scratchbuilt using blueboard, balsa and putty.

Cheers,

Barry

*rubs hands together*

Yes! Now that's the ticket!

Need that for a bit of the old cattle raid and pig rustlin'. Maybe even goose thievery! Heh.

Swell concept and execution!

Great job. I love it! Very well composed and detailed with great use of foilage. Make sure you submit to Fanaticus. It beats most of the stuff on there.

So you used the putty for your thatch? Were the buildings just knocked up from balsa?

Thanks :)

The basic shape of the building is carved from blueboard and onto this the timbers are glued to this with PVA or whiteglue. Once the glue is dry, I use a stiff toothbrush to tap the bluefoam. This done reasonably hard and gives the foam a texture that is similar I had applied polyfiller or spackfiller. It is also alot less messy. It's not visable in the phtoos but I also added a broken section on one of the buildings and feed thin wire in to give the arrearance of the wattle framming.

The thatch is made using a two part epoxy putty called Kneadit here in Australia. It dries quite quickly so I apply it in sections and then scribe it with an old blade.

I'm a member of Fanaticus. My name over there is lewchips.

Thanks Theomar,

The pen is made using the ends of incense sticks once they have finished burning. As the sticks are all slightly different it makes it easy to get an irregular look. It's also the loveliest smalling pen around ;)

I plan on making another one as there are two or three things that I would do differently such as the pond.

It turned out a little brighter than I normally would like. Generally I like my water to have a greenish/dark blue base but this turned out a tad too bright for my liking.  As it happens, I live close enough to the Murray River here in Australia to be able to see it from my backyard and it's colour isn't much different to the colours used on this forum :D I know rivers and water generally have a muddy appearance but I like the additional bit of colour on my table.

Another thing I would also change are the trees. I am a co-owner of a small tree making business here in Australia and since making these trees we now make trees with a hint of texture which I believe look much better.
