Skirmish Sangin rule question
« on: May 02, 2014, 05:47:47 PM »
Just bought the rules:-) the look great
Just one thing looks a bit odd - the bolt action rifle shoots longer, does more dammage and is cheaper than an assault rifle - any difference that i have missed??

Lars:-)

Good point, I've sent the question to Radio Dishdash Publishing ;)

I like the rules too, a lot of tactical actions, the moral test and the mission who can change with the first serious wound.
And the french foreign legion of course ;)

Well, it makes sense.

Cheaper they are, they are more accurate due to longer barrel and they fire an heavier bullet (increase range and stopping power). On the other hand they will often be handled by lesser trained people so they will hit less often.

In real world terms the main reason to get assault rifles was increased rate of fire (but in practice compensated by increased ammunition expenditure). Overall from a real world point of view I do not find anything bad in this rule.

It's make sense if the bolt action rifle is in the hands of a poor trained Afghan, but the game allows to give it to a high trained Mujaheden who can easily match in accuracy with a british soldier.

We see nothing in the rules to offset the lack of firepower.

Thought a little about the bolt action rifle - it takes on action point to fire the assault rifle , maybe it should take 2 AP's to fire the bolt action rifle??
In real life i shot both - it takes longer to operate the bolt action, so maybe it will work out in this game:-)

I've received the answer; there is no downside to the bolt action rifle.
The game don't track the ammunition or rates of fire so the bolt action rifle is better than a assault rifle, for the rules.
But, according to the answer, the concept of the game is a narrative wargame. You can win with a full bolt action rifles army but you miss the point, you miss what this rules have been created for. Share an experience where the two players have fun.

With this point of view, I understand better this game.
But for a more competitive game, 2 AP for fire the bolt action rifle can be a solution.
