Gladiator project (more stuff added 11.5.)
« on: May 03, 2014, 06:50:37 PM »
I needed some time away from my 15mm renaissance stuff, so I ended up painting these.
The gladiators have been lurking in my painting cue since last Hamburger Tactica ( We played Gladiator wars in local bar in Hamburg and decided that we should start a tradition).

But I couldn't just paint the minis. I had to make an arena as well.
The playing board is made from 12mm thick board. I made the squares with a circular saw.
The board was then sanded and painted. I made it in three pieces, so it should be easily transported (or used as two smaller boards). The columns are magnetized.
I got a bit carried away with the blood effect, but that's what watching Spartacus does to people.

Then it struck me. I had to make a bunch tokens. So I made blood splatter tokens to mark wounds, discarded shields and weapons to be used as such or maybe as stunned tokens.

I'm quite pleased how it all ended up. And it took me only two days to make all this.

Now I just need to find a decent set of gladiator rules (The Gladiator Wars sucked)that don't need a hex grid.  ;)
I was thinking about Ospreys Ronin with Gladiator modifications (from Wargames Illustrated April 2014).

Kiitos ja moi!

Great looking board and models, the blood effects really add character to the board. If this only took two days I can only imagine what you can do given even more time.

Very nice. The recent craze for all things gladitorial have got me thinking on if/how to do the terrain. This shows me the terrain can be simple, but very effective. Thanks for sharing.

Tehokasta toimintaa. Embarrassingly, mine are still untouched, even though I was possibly the loudest advocate of this whole project in Hamburg. A few other guys here have also painted the stuff I traded to them, and found arenas somewhere. I think they've been testing Habet Hoc Habet and Munera Sine Missione. There's a copy of Ludus Gladiatorius around too, although probably used just for the miniatures.

We planned testing them all at the summer event. Remember to sign up.

Gorgeous stuff...I need to get back with my buddy and finish my similar project.  I love the simplicity and modularity of your board.  I'm close to "finishing" my own Gladiator project/school.  I need to get crackin' on it.

Thanks for Your kind words.

I made more board sections for bigger games and painted rest of my gladiators.
Still looking for rules tough.

Very, very nice.  I love the creativity behind the modular arena.
