SCW Armoured Car
« on: July 16, 2008, 02:05:56 PM »
As the Spanish Civil War appears to be dealt with here, I thought people might be interested in the eBay pic:

They were all drawn to the Keep; the soldiers who brought death; the father and daughter fighting for life; the people who have always feared it; and the one man who knows its secret....

Those homemade vehicles make this period so interesting.

That might be interesting to have on the shelf. Also I just noticed the little rain gutters over the gunports....how considerate of the designer. :)

It's the superstructure of a Republican armoured truck... in this case the 'Albacete'

It carried 8 or 9 men and a turret mounted HMG (one source says an infantry gun?), with 3 rifle/lmg ports to each side. There was a turretless version too.

There are some more shots of this 'Tiznao' and other Republican vehicles at;

Thank you Mr. Hale. Nice pics on that site. I found one showing what appears to be the same type of vehicle.

What were the chain links dangling from the armour for?  ???

You're welcome my friend.

There's a distant shot of the back of one too on P4 iirc.

The chain links were to prevent grenades and molotov cocktails being thrown underneath the vehicle and to provide the tyres with some protection again bullets and shrapnel, while maintaining sufficient ground clearance for the suspension.

You'll see a similar thing in use on Israeli vehicles in Gaza and possibly modern US vehicles in Iraq etc.

Great site Jim!

This Albacete is certainly very nice and I'd love to add it to my collection, but the Hispano Suiza  on that site simply stole my heart. What a beauty!

There really were some excellent looking designs. I like the Albacete as it looks very futuristic, in a 1930's sort of way, very much 'Shape of Things to Come' style imo.  :)
