First painting post! Warrior monks for Ronin
« on: May 23, 2014, 01:58:02 AM »
This is my first crack at Samurai painting.  While I tried triads with the robes, I'm reminded that I need to invest in Foundry paints.  I just can't get the color jumps quite right on my own.

Those look great.

Maybe there are sites/blogs/readers here with their own triads using other paint manufacturers?
Look around before committing to (expensive) Foundry paints. I know at least Reaper also sells some paints in triads.
Or you could also do the simple "mix in a darker or lighter" for your base/highlight.

Don't be too hard on yourself: yellow is the hardest colour to shade and highlight, but to judge from the photos you've got it just right.

+1 to that.
I have used the foundry triad shades on my warrior monks (Link:  http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=58201.0) which seem to produce a decent result, but no better than yours.

Excellent work. Personally I'm not a fan of the actual figures but your paint jobs are great. Looks like you have an organised painting area...totally unlike me  :)

Cracking and I agree the Foundry Triads (bought 4 sets myself and have never looked back) are a boon 8)

Nice bright and vibrant colours.
May i suggest that you paint the edges of the bases black, rather than sandy brown?
That way he bases too will really pop too just like the monks...
Unless you always base everything that way?

Looking good. I know black hat sell coat d arms triads if there any help to you. They are reasonably priced but sometimes postage can be a killer since the new 4 pots rule.

First of all, thanks for the kind words and suggestions!  There are some great suggestions here and I'll consider them all.  I've been dabbling in triads to improve as a painter but its a tricky business.  Part of the beauty of that style is the way a figure pops.  My challenge is working up the 2 jumps from the base color.  I was surprised how subtle the jumps turned out in the pictures.  From a painting distance of 4-5" it did not seem so subtle!   I think I'll invest in a good set of triad paints to take the guesswork out. Maybe over time and with practice, this will become something I can mix up myself.

I'm a long time lurker who finally became a member.  I paint almost every night but I've been reluctant to post up any of my work.  Now that I've survived my first post, I plan on many more.  And I think I'll add "comments and criticisms welcome" when I do.  There is so much to learn and so far to go.   THANKS!

You should post either way, even if something isn't great people will give constructive criticism rather than be harsh about it. My samurai are not great because I haven't done much painting at all but the people here are still nice about it and give me useful criticism when they can. I am Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff.

Round 2 of my Ronin painting.  I have to say these samurai were the hardest thing I've ever painted.  Part of it is that I broke from my habit of painting with washes.  I only used washes on the metals with these.  Looking forward to giving Ronin a spin!
