Song of Blades and Heroes Mini Board
« on: May 25, 2014, 05:27:22 PM »
Here's a quick after action report for the SoBaH mini game I ran at my local model railway show (it was a modelling demo, honest  ;)). The phots were taken outside today as I didn't really get time to take them at the show.

The general set up (with a few extra trees). Overall board size 450 x 450mm (18" x 18").

The heroes - A tough barbarian who is handy at killing animals and a cleric who knows how to dispose of undead and cast the odd sleep spell.

The first encounter; skeleton guarding the burial ground ...

Who are soon dealt with. The heroes have a good search around the burial ground, but find nothing.

The second encounter is a bit tougher for our heroes; three barbarian types, one of which appears to be a shaman.

After a couple of rounds of combat, which included some poorly aimed arrows and some "damp squib" fire magic from the encounter group, the heroes manage to eliminate the warrior and the archer and successfully cast a sleep spell on the shaman. The ruins were searched, but still not treasure.

The final encounter; something big and grizzly in the woods ....

The single bear proved a bit of a handful, managing to resist a sleep spell and several rounds of combat, until the hero landed the killing blow.

Success! our heroes find the hidden treasure ... chocolate coins all round to the victors.

Plenty of interest in the board as a scenic item and even got a game in with a member of the public.

Great looking board and terrain. I've been wanting to make a small 2x2 board for quick games. This might be the inspiration I needed (as if I need an excuse lol).

Lovely board. What's the source of those pine trees? Love their trunks.

I really like the idea behind these small boards. You can get a lot of variety out of them just by switching some terrain elements around, and it's very portable too! :) Maybe you should build a fancy wooden suitcase for it where everything for the game fits in, for gaming on the go ;)

Thanks Doc, glad to inspire you.

Thanks Dilettante, the pine trees are from K&M with a mix of Snapdragon resin stumps and some I made my self from dowel and plywood. I purposely made mine to match the resin ones.

Thanks Cherno, the idea of a wooden box for the board and the scenery is great, except my woodworking skills are .... lacking. However, I might give it a go, as the Wild West board is exactly the same size as this one.

Excellent looking game and some really interesting miniatures.

Thanks Engel, the miniatures are mostly old Citadel with a selection of Grenadier/ Copplestone thrown in. It was good to get them onto the board and game with them.

That is a lovely board indeed.

Where did you get the flock from with the yellow bits in. I like that a lot. I used to have some similar but it has long since been used up and I can't get any anymore.

Thanks Rob, the general ground cover is a real mixture; it is primarily Woodland Scenics blended grass with some Green Scene scatter added to it (#133, I think) and also some of the Javis "spring" and "summer" scatter in varying quantities.

Link for Green Scenes - http://www.green-scene.co.uk/Scatters.html

Thanks aggro84 and Little Odo, glad you like it.

Sweet board! Wonderful presentation! Fun game! And all in a couple of square meters of space! Your board sure looks like a great playground for scenery and action.

Thanks for the re-shoot, the pictures came out very well in the sunlight.
