Gunman's Law Kickstarter: worth it?
« on: May 25, 2014, 06:20:12 PM »
Just stumbled across the following Kickstarter: "Gunman’s Law: Wild West Shootout RPG & Tabletop Game." It uses a "Fast Action Card Deck" to resolve all combat, rather than dice and tables. Looks interesting, but unsure about its suitability for multi-player or larger games. This is a rules-only Kickstarter---no minis. I can find no references to how the rules handle cover, movement, etc., but the video shows a typical shootout situation.

It has been funded and has just three days to go.

I have found no discussion of it here, and am interested in your thoughts on the system.

Find it here:

Looks pretty decent to me.  I think a lot would be added with some nice artwork.  Love the idea of so many characters, that's really cool.  I appreciate the economy of trying to cram all of the info onto single cards (and I think it'd be fun to make up those cards) but I'd lean toward doing a single deck of wound impacts and results (much easier to place alongside a miniature/character card and keep track of the results).

While I like the mechanic I imagine the game is more than single gunfights (as that would get rather boring).  All in all, I'd definitely pick up a set to check it out when it's finished.

EDIT: $65 for the full game?  I take it back...that's a bit too steep.

Its only $45 if you are in the US and that includes shipping. Which is still a bit on the high side.

Ahhh, okay.

That's not too terrible, but it will depend entirely on the quality of the rulebook and cards.  I'm not excited by the "unlock premium cards" thing they have.  I'd have to see artwork and card quality before spending money on that. If I can sell a box of professional quality cards (184 cards) for $30 (granted, not much profit)...$45 better get you a pretty nice set of cards.

I see now, the version I saw was for included international shipping (which is always a b_tch).  I'll definitely check this out when it becomes commercially available.
